Descripción:
1937. J.P. (John Peter) Laux became a Master Mechanic in 1915 for the Lehigh Railway and rose to Superintendent of Motive Power when Lehigh RR was its highest. He produced this manuscript of which there are no known original copies there are 57 hand mounted photographs in the basic engines and concludes with the Locomotive Ownership by year, 1856-1936. The Average Tractive Force in 1921 was 37,621 lbs but by 1936 it had increased to 51, 293 lbs. The No. 5100 was delivered in 1931 as a class T-1 (two were delivered, Richard Duley notes Baldwin also delivered later at Class T-1a). This original work complements minor details in Duley's significant contribution. There are no copies on OCLC. Since the age of steam ended, these magnificent workhorses were often scrapped. Very few of the locomotives have survived but here are nice black-and-white photographs from Superintendent J.P. Laux that show the Lehigh Valley Railroad's history in the period just before it was supplanted by diesel and the emergence… Leer más

Urbana & London: University of Illinois Press, 1966. Octavo. Original green cloth, titles to spine and upper board in black. With the dust jacket. Contemporary ownership signature in blue ink to the front free endpaper. An excellent, fresh copy in the lightly rubbed jacket that is tanned, particularly along the spine panel, and has some nicks and short splits at the edges. First edition of this important work on self-reproduction in machines and life forms, scare in the dust jacket. Von Neumann became interested in the abilities of computers to self-reproduce during his work on the Institute for Advanced Studies computer project - noting that, since a Turing machine can make exact copies of any readable sequence, it can copy itself. He hoped to formulate a theory of self-reproduction that would be general enough to explain and predict self-reproduction in both machines and living things. "Using the same method of logical substitution by which a Turing machine can be instructed to interpret… Leer más

Washington D.C.: US Govt. Printing Office, 1942. Colour poster (28 x 40 in). Professionally mounted, glazed, and framed using archival materials. Original creases from folding, bright and fresh. Excellent condition. An important Second World War poster promoting women in the wartime workforce, produced in 1942 by the War Manpower Commission. At the time, "Women in the War" was one of the most widely distributed images of a woman laboring in war production, unlike the "We Can Do It" poster, which was produced only for Westinghouse plants during a few weeks in 1943 and did not become iconic until the 1980s. "Among the many agencies President Roosevelt had created during the war was the War Manpower Commission, formed in April 1942 to oversee war labor issues in the military, industrial, and civilian sectors. And in June 1942, the Office of War Information was formed to manage the flows of news and propaganda about the war to the public. By 1943, when the labor shortage was most acute, the two… Leer más

Philadelphia: H. C. Carey & I. Lea, 1826. Hardcover. Very Good. vi, 51, [1] p., 62 leaves of engraved plates, including 4 double-leaf plates (2 folded) containing 72 drawings, plans, and maps; 29 x46 cm. Contemporary half calf with plain boards. Printed paper label on front board. Errata slip tipped in following title page. Howes, S 1075. The Pennsylvania Society for the Promotion of Internal Improvement, organized in 1824, sent William Strickland (1787-1854) to England in 1825 to study the most recent developments in transportation engineering in order to improve the ability to travel and ship goods across the state. Over the course of the year, Strickland sent home reports on canals, railways, roads, and iron-making from Great Britain. After his return in Dec., he was appointed engineer of the Pennsylvania State Canal and his reports were issued in this volume. The great interest that it generated is indicated by the 2-page list of subscribers, among whom were canal companies (Delaware… Leer más

Descripción:
1605 1ed Fiammelli La Riga Matematica Military Engineering Civil Mathematics
Giovanni Fiammelli was a 16th-century Italian engineer who focused on mathematics as the foundation for his research and planning. While little is known of his life, he published one of the most important mathematics treatises in 'La Riga Matematica'. In this book, Fiammelli discusses his theories on trigonometry and the use of math in military and civil engineering. Fiammelli explains his techniques in using mat to determine water depths, measure long distances, and give context to architectural planning.
This 1605 first edition is highly rare and highly valuable! It contains desirable in-text geometric figures.

The personal copy of Monsieur François Philippe Voisin (1821-1918) (= Voisin Bey), his name stamped in gilt on front cover, a French engineer and from 1861 to 1870, the chief engineer of the Suez Canal Company during the construction of the Suez Canal, together with its director Ferdinand de Lesseps. The 48 plates show 76 collotypes (numbered 1 through 74 and 2 unnumbered collotypes), they depict views, portraits, seascapes, and the inauguration itself and showing on the other hand the canal (and its surroundings) on its entire length. First edition of Agostino Ramelli's important illustrated treatise, dedicated to this monarch. Ramelli was the Italian engineer of Henry III.
Brunet, IV, 1095; Mortimer, French, 452; Dibner, Heralds of Science, 173; Norman, 1777.
The Duke of Anjou, future Henri III, saved him by paying his ransom when he was dangerously injured and taken prisoner at the siege of La Rochelle in 1573. As Henri III became a king he kept Ramelli close to him by awarding him a considerable pension.
This fundamental treatise of mechanics is therefore dedicated to Henri III and Ramelli expresses all his gratitude towards the royal favour in his dedication.

Middlesbrough: Hoods Fine Printers, on behalf of the author, 1930. Collection of 16 bound lithographs. Hardcover, 41cm x 28cm. Cream and orange cloth binding, with title and South Durham Cargo Fleet Steel stamped on the covers. Cards are slightly marked. Each titled on the tissue-guard. Titled tissue-guards are present for all 16 lithographs. Some of the tissue guards have very light folds, and the lithographs themselves are in near fine condition. Viva Talbot's importance as an industrial artist of great talent has largely been forgotten, but her unprecedented access to the British steel industry, primarily through her family connections, enabled her to achieve a degree of accuracy and depth that provides valuable historical, industrial, and artistic insight. Her recent small popularity has largely been empowered by the rediscovery of her talent and ability by Dr. Joan Heggie of Teesside University. Scarce.
