The six compartment spines are decorated with a five leaf flower in each compartment, and title and volume number in gilt. Edge dentelles. a.e.g. Tips very lightly rubbed. Spines sunned, with joints lightly rubbed. Some loss of gilt to the spine's lettering. New paste downs and added end papers. Each volume's title page, and volume 1's half title page have been stamped with an oval stamp. These stamps show signs of having been attempted to be erased. It is my belief, when coupled with the new paste downs and end papers, that this set was formerly an ex-library set, with an attempt to remove all library markings. Bound in the publisher's brown, blind-stamped cloth, with title on the spine in gilt. Spine lettering fading; edge wear, small loss of cloth at the spine's crown and foot. Occasional dots of foxing, but the text is generally clean. Binding holding firm. Author's first book, a collection of shorts, written when he was 24. His most famous work, RAGGED DICK, would set his theme of a poor boy, going from "Rags to Riches" by working hard and doing the right thing.

A clean, bright copy, with slight rubbing to lower extremities and spine ends, front hinge mended, light discoloration to endpapers where exposed to dust jacket flaps, faint gouge to fore-edge with quarter-inch tear at edge of last five leaves. In original dust jacket (a few small chips and tears at edges, light sunning to spine and upper edge of flaps). Rare in dust jacket!

This book is in very good condition and has nice gold gilt work. Original boards and cloth. The spine has had professional repair. The original binding has been reinforced (re-backed), but in a way that preserves the original spine cloth and look. Some foxing on the interior front and back covers, end pages and along some page edges. All illustrations present. No additional markings from previous owners, aside from the inscription. No DJ. First Italian edition, first printing of Harry Potter e la pietra filosofale ("Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone"), with Joanne Rowling on copyright page. Comes with the rare first issue dust jacket that depicts Harry Potter without glasses. Only a few hundred copies were printed with this first issue dust jacket, and were soon corrected and issued with the second issue dust jacket with glasses. Major defects: The dust jacket has a short cut along the folded edge of the front flap. The dust jacket is gently used with tiny creases along the top and bottom edges of the spine.
