Robert Baron was a 17th-century Scottish theologian known for being one of the 'Aberdeen doctors'. Baron is much better known for being an Anglican bishop and preacher rather than his written works; however, one of his known works was 'General Metaphysics' – a philosophical treatise consisting of the basics of metaphysics with the influences of French scholar Claudius Salmasius.
This 1657 Latin edition was edited by Antonius Clementius, published in Lyon.

René Descartes was a 17th-century French philosopher whose theories and discoveries spawned an influx of commentary and responsive writings from western philosophers. In 1644, Descartes wrote "Principles of Philosophy", a work that discussed the principles of nature and the laws of physics. A number of the theories in this work were borrowed by Isaac Newton in his 'Principia', particularly the laws of motion. 'Principles' was one of the first comprehensive accounts of the universe.

This fine 1698 printing of "Les Principes" is very rare and known for being a highly valuable printing.

Plato was an ancient Greek philosopher and student of Socrates, known for his contributions to philosophy, particularly in the areas of ethics, metaphysics, and epistemology. His numerous dialogues explored themes of justice, nature, reality, and ideal social concepts. Throughout his dialogues, Plato includes countless maxims, proverbs, and wise sayings which are referred to as 'gnomologia'. These maxims capture moral and philosophical teachings in short phrases, typical of most proverbial sayings.
This 16th-century printing of Plato's 'Gnomologia' includes both Latin and Greek translation of the phrases with commentary and discussion on each. Note the engraved title page of this 1582 Tournes edition, collected and edited by Niccolo Liburnio.
