Kinglake based his history of the Crimean War both on his own experiences and on the papers of Lord Raglan given to him by Raglan's widow. Kinglake ordered that Raglan's papers be destroyed after Kinglake's death, thus rendering his own work the only secondary source describing Raglan's account of the War. Fair/No Jacket. 4to. 552 pages, plus 24 of 25 plates (lacking #20; nine folding), 3 folding maps; 523 pages, plus 26 of 27 plates (lacking #4; 15 folding). Each volume with 14 vignettes, of which 13 are colored in volume I and 10 are colored in volume II. Early, though likely not contemporary, polished leather with raised spine bands and gilt stamped lettering. Marbled end leaves. Covers show scattered rubbing and light wear at spine ends. Joints of boards at spine are tender, though still hold. Contents show scattered light offsetting, a little foxing, and occasional smudges, but overall are fairly clean and intact.

Containing 40 pp. of thick cardboard, with 140 black and white and 4 color photographs pasted in, and 4 B & W photos and 1 negative laid in. The album rendered unique and amazing by the addition of 15 exquisitely detailed SIGNED pen and ink tracings of warships, 11 modern Soviet Navy warships and 4 tall ships, on rice paper, with each tracing interspersed between the photography pages. 1810 RUSSIA Costume of Russian Empire Color Illustrated Clothing Travel Voyages

An extremely valuable and important illustrated account of history of costumes and clothing from the Russian Empire. Published in 1810, Edward Harding gathered English and French descriptions of impressive, aquatint engravings. The first edition of this work was published 1803 but is considered inferior to this edition because of the lack of engraved title and shorter explanations of the illustrations.

This 1792 English edition was translated from the original Russian by James Smirnove. Note the huge folding table of arms and uniforms of the Russian Empire.

Lithogr. title within decorative Art noveau frame, 3 unnumb. ll. introduction and dedication, 66 collotype plates with horses mostly against a landscape or architectural backdrop, after paintings and photographs, each with printed captions in French, Russian, English and German, printed on thick glazed paper sheets, 30 unnumb. ll. with letterpress text on verso of thin tissue guard-like sheets in four languages. One errata leaf printed on red paper stock bound in. Cont. dark green morocco, gilt stamped Russian title to front cover, all edges gilt. Endpapers lined with white glazed paper with a moiree pattern. Oblong folio (495 x 400 mm). Extremeties worn and rubbed, front cover discoloured, spine evenly sunned and spine-ends bumped. Rare large-format work with magnificent depictions of horses with KVK and OCKC showing only four copies (ÖNB, Madrid, NYPL, and Chicago) with 31 plates only (?). A number of the thin letterpress leaves with short tears else fine. The author was a master of the guard.

An Account of a 1785-1794 Geographical and Astronomical Expedition to the Northern Parts of Russia, for ascertaining the degrees of latitude and longitude of the mouth of the River Kovima; of the whole coast of the Tshutski, to East Cape; and of the Aleutian islands in the Eastern Ocean, stretching to the American Coast. By command of Imperial Majesty Catherine the Second, Empress of all Russians. One of the most important Russian expeditions to Siberia and Alaska, with much material on the land and people, views of Kadiak, Aleutians, Kamchatka, etc. Captain Joseph Billings, who had sailed with James Cook on Cook's last voyage, became an officer in the Russian navy and was given command of this expedition by the Empress. He had, as his secretary, Martin Sauer, who was responsible for this, the fullest account of this important expedition. Visits were made to Kodiack, Montague Island, and Prince William Sound. Housed in a custom-made maroon cloth covered clamshell box, with gilt title to the front and spine.
