Paris: rue S. Andre-des-Arts, No. 46, An 6 = 1798. Full leather, marbled endpapers. Ex-Library, light foxing and occasional small marginal stains, spine tops of volumes 1 & 2 chipped (1 is light), all hinges intact, but leather is somewhat weak in many with some resultant cracking, some rubbing of extremities, esp. corners: VG. 8vo. Frontispiece engravings in each volume + 12 additional engravings. There are 3 more engravings than described in the preliminary text.. TEXT IN FRENCH. TEXTE EN FRANCAIS. Boston: Roberts Brothers, 1881. Decorated green cloth with marbled endpapers. An odd-shaped piece cut out of front free endpaper, hinges cracked, spine headers heavily rubbed, light general wear: VG/no dj. 12mo. Mason #310: 1st American edition, later impression(?) with top edges gilt instead of yellow and decorated endpapers. Binding decoration is sunflowers printed in black rather than cherub imbibing seen on some copies. Mason does not establish priority.

London: J. & P. Knapton, H. Lintot, J. & R. Tonson, and S. Draper, 1751. Full calf, 5 raised bands, spines & cover edges gilt tooled. Covers lightly rubbed with some splitting of joints; overall a nice clean tight set, some foxing and browning throughout: VG. 12mo. Illustrated with 24 copper plates by diverse artists including Sam Wale, N. Blakey, Ant. Walker, F. Hayman. 1st edition thus.

Parisiis/Portu: Ex Typis Cosson/ Apud Costa Paiva et Fratrem, 1820. Full mottled calf with gilt tooled spines, marbled endpapers. Light cover rubbing, some pencil markings on front and rear blanks of volume 2, else clean tight set: VG+. 8vo. TEXT IN LATIN. Edited with scholarly notes and apparatus by Jean Baptiste Louis Crevier.

Amsterdam: Jaques [sic] Desbordes, 1734. Full contemporary calf rebacked with gilt tooled calf, leather spine label. Owner's name and "le President de Montesquieu" written in pen on title page, very lightly rubbed at cover extremities, small indentation scar on rear cover: a very nice VG+ copy. Small 8mo. Printing and the Mind of Man, p, 117: "... this was immediately recognized as a major work, and it has remained the most popular and widely read of his books." "... neither its style, a masterly succintness, nor its matter ... have lost their value.. 1st edition. 1st issue. Title page in red and black. Le Petit p. 493-4. This copy has neither the mispagination error on pp. 101-104 nor the errata page. It does have all errors on pages 129, 130, 131, & 267. None of these is a cancel sheet. cf Brunet.

Paris: Librairie Universelle de P. Mongie Aine, 1825. Full tree calf, leather spine labels, gilt tooled spines, marbled edges & endpapers. Top of spine of volume 1 chipped, light holes, tears in rear cover of volume 1 near spine joint, some foxing; overall a very nice attractive set. 8vo. First edition. 1e edition. TEXT IN FRENCH.
