30 ll.Interesting French manuscript guide for travelling from Alexandria to Cairo, written by a Norman nobleman. The guide instructs the traveller to travel overnight from Alexandria to Atfeh (Al 'Atf) by way of a cangia (a type of passenger boat) over the Mahmoudiyah Canal. In Atfeh the traveller is advised to buy a marmite (a French cooking vessel), a casserole and several clay jugs for storing Nile water, before boarding a dahabeah (a large cangia) to Cairo. Among the activities suggested for Cairo is a visit to the cavalry school in Giza, where its director, the French colonel Varin, will receive the traveller like "a good Norman innkeeper". When visiting the pyramids, the traveller will be assailed by Bedouins “in an instant". If you desire to climb a pyramid, "address yourself to the Sheikh el-Beled and tell him to give you three men and to send away the others. A Bedouin will take you by each hand, another will push you from behind and in an instant you will be up". Also of interest is the… Leer más

1800 1ed Vancouver Voyage to North Pacific Canada Alaska Illustrated French

Rare first edition on the most important voyage of the North Pacific!

In 1791, Royal Navy officer George Vancouver set out on an expedition to North America's Pacific Northwest, exploring western Canada, Alaska, and parts of Northwest United States. The specifics of this voyage were published at the turn of the century, both in English and French, and is often considered to be the most accurate account of the Pacific Northwest. This 1800 first French edition includes impressive full-page views of Vancouver's discoveries, including an impressive engraving of Mount Rainier. Perhaps Cowan's perspective is the most telling:
"This work is superior to any of its kind, and constitutes the chiefest source of authority of that period."

According to Howes, of all modern expeditions to the Pacific, Vancouver's is one of the most important. In this work Vancouver also describes Alaskan and Canadian natives, nautical and astronomical… Leer más

1854 HUGE MAP Colton's Western Tourist Emigrant's Guide Americana California

J.H. Colton founded an American mapmaking company in the early 1830s which became an international leader in the map publishing industry until 1890. Colton created railroad maps, immigrant guides, elaborate atlases, and more all printed using engraved steel plates, which produced higher quality prints than maps made with less costly wax engravings, which were often separately hand water colored. and were recognized for their decorative borders.
J.H. Colton's 'Western Tourist and Emigrant's Guide'is an important 19th-century geographical book with an enormous folding map of the American 'west' including Ohio, Missouri, Indiana and Wisconsin. According to Howes, this work includes descriptions and material on California, Oregon, and Texas, with overland routes and westward expansion.

Descripción:
A Génes [i.e., Genova]: Chez Yves Gravier, 1773. Very Good. Octavo (18 cm); [2], 155, [1] pages, and [13] folded leaves of engraved views, maps, and illustrations. Engraved crest of Genoa on title page. Text within typographic border. Bound in woodblock-printed floral polychrome wraps. Mottled edges. White background of wraps rather toned. Second, much expanded edition of this architectural guide to the city of Genoa, intended, one supposes, for French and Francophone tourists. (The 1768 edition was shorter and had only four illustrations.) The printer, named in the colophon as Adamo Scionico, chose good paper stock that holds the bite of the type and of the engraved plates, which are bright and fresh. The authors names do not appear in the text, but do appear in a very similar 1768 publication in Italian from the same printer, and they have been traditionally applied to the French text as well.
