Faded spine title. Paste front has several micro scrapes and green cloth has two blemishes on front. Sixteen (16) full color plates by the master, Arthur Rackham; two are detached and laid in at proper place, and one partially detached. Green cloth, worn corners with frayed crown and foot cloth. A previous owners short holiday gift inscription on both front and rear end paper (dated 1924.) Scattered moderate foxing, more so to prelims. A lovely early edition. 126 pages. Protected in a mylar slip.

Bound in publishers red cloth with fairy playing pan flute in gilt on front cover and titles, etc. in gilt on spine. Both front and rear end papers feature printed maps. SCARCE dust jacket features illustration of baby being helped along by 4 fairies tipped in. Titles, etc. on spine in green ink, back cover features other ads for other titles by Barrie. Dust jacket is missing top corner and lower third of front cover, top and base of spine are missing, along with other tears and creases. Book is faded along spine, foxing to end papers, otherwise clean and unmarked. A Good copy in this SCARCE dust jacket. Arthur Rackham RWS was an English book illustrator. He is recognized as one of the leading figures during the Golden Age of British book illustration.

Barrie's beloved character, Peter Pan's namesake "came from Peter Llewelyn Davies, who when still a baby became the subject of stories told by Barrie to [Peter's older brothers]. According to these stories Peter, like all babies, had once been a bird and could still fly out of his nursery window and back to Kensington Gardens, because his mother had forgotten to weigh him at birth. From these stories came the 'Peter Pan' chapters in The Little White Bird [published 1902], afterwards re-issued with Arthur Rackham illustrations as Peter Pan in Kensington Gardens" (Carpenter, 177). "The 50 color plates were unanimously praised by all who saw them. One critic wrote: 'Mr. Rackham seems to have dropped out of some cloud in Mr. Barrie's fairyland, sent by special providence to make pictures in tune with his whimsical genius" (Dalby, 76-77).
