Quarto, 11.25 x 9 inches, contemporary dark red horizontally grained leather, good (minus) with edges, joints and corners well rubbed, but still solidly bound, some darkening, surface scratches and stains to leather, contents good to very good, collated complete, with dozens of plates but quite foxed (the text pages are largely free of foxing, and tidemarks from old waterstains to much of the book and certainly affecting the majority of the plates. A good solid copy but no prizewinner. Collated, complete.Published in five volumes between 1807 and 1835, this is the third volume only of this work from English antiquary, topographer, author and editor John Britton.This volume depicts and describes locations including the Collegiate Church of Manchester, St George's Chapel in Windsor, Norwich Cloister's and Cambridge's Round Church.A lovely first edition from Britton, a prolific writer on subjects surrounding the architecture of English sites. Collated, complete. Ode to the beauty of Great Britain's architectural antiquities, featuring a series of striking engraved plates illustrative of views, elevations, plans, and details of ancient English edifices. Each plate is accompanied with descriptive notes. Written by John Britton, English antiquary, topographer, and author. White library numbers to base of spines. Library labels removed from front endpapers leaving slight marks. Library stamps to versos of title pages largely rubbed off. Occasional library stamps in text and to plates. Volume I front cover detached; some damp staining throughout; Volume II lacks top half of spine and bottom half detached. Volume III spine about to detach. Volumes IV and V bindings sound. The following number of PLATES HAVE BEEN REMOVED I (4); II (6); III (5); IV (15) and V (4). A total of 29 plates have been removed but still present are about 329. Actual texts appear to be complete although pages 18-41 are absent from Volume IV (apparently as issued). Very heavy set and probably best viewed before purchase (by appointment). Not available overseas. May split on application. . 1st Edition. Hardback. Good.

Some foxing on plates as usual (more so than text pages) due to nature of paper used. Happy to provide images. Definitely a set you would be proud to own and display, or to give. Very good condition with only minor signs of wear. Only very few plates with faded dampstain to outer margins. An extraordinary set of architectural scenery in high-quality engravings. Includes besides illustrations of Churches and Cathedrals also detailed engravings of Castles and Castle-Gardens, amazing illustrations of Eton College, as well as several 19th century Engravings of the final resting place of King George VI and Queen Elizabeth II in St.George's Chapel in Windsor Castle from all directions, Roslyn Chapel, etc. etc.
