The poem was first published in 1873 by Smith Elder and Co, but they did not need to reprint it until 1889 when it was published again in a set of Browning's Poetical Works.The poem tells a story of sexual intrigue, religious obsession and death in Paris and Normandy. Robert Browning was an English poet and playwright of the Victorian Era. Some pages remain unopened. In the publisher's original cloth binding. Externally, very smart with light rubbing to the joints and head and tail of the spine. With light marks to the boards. Previous owner inscription to the front free endpaper. Gilt dentelles with binder's stamp. Green endpapers. Blank verse poem about sexual intrigue, religious obsession and violent death in contemporary Paris. Based on a true story of jewellry heir Antoine Mellerio. The poem garnered mixed reviews and was criticized for its journalistic tendencies by the critic C. H. Herford. Binding with very light wear along edges and on covers. Previous owner's name inked to front free endpaper. Binding in overall very good+, interior in near fine condition.

Book is presumed a gift from Browning to Benjamin Jowett, the then Master at Balliol College at Oxford, with whom a correspondence is documented. Green cloth covers show light edge wear and light surface staining. Corners square but rubbed through, Spine ends and external hinges show heavier (still light) wear. Front internal hinge cracked, binding somewhat loose. Scattered foxing throughout book. A later date (May 1957) is written on ffep in pen along with a pencil signature. On title page, near inscription, an old price is written very lightly in pen. Includes telegram dated May 8, 1957 which reads, "Yes R.B's handwriting and signature. Our good friend Mr. Cramer sent to England for it. I agree what a find. Other little book also first I think. He is looking for the silent answer.… Leer más
