A very gently used copy with light age toning to endpapers, previous owners name and blind stamp to front endpaper. No other marks in text. Text block with very clean edges. The First UK printing published by Methuen, London in 1924. The BOOK is in Very Good++ or better condition. Light pushing at the spine ends. A little light rubbing at the corners. Gilt titling and decorations to the spine and boards remains bright. Free from inscriptions and erasures. Light offsetting to the end-papers. Some toning and spotting to the text-block. Light toning to the extreme page edges. with a little light spotting to the prelims. The WRAPPER is in Very Good- condition with mild edge wear and loss at the spine ends (see images. Large closed tears to the lower spine folds and a smaller one to the upper rear flap fold. Some toning to the spine and folds. Despite the issues, the wrapper presents well in the removable Brodart archival cover. The 16 B/W plates are present and clean. A very scarce title with such attributes and a very early historical biography from the author who went on to write the 'Hornblower's series and 'The African Queen'. Collectible. Publisher's green cloth with titles and decoration in gilt to spine, and blind to upper. Other copies have been seen with gilt to upper. With the plain dust-jacket showing a blurb to the front cover, and a price of 10/6 to the spine. A black ink ownership to fly-leaf, and the bookplate of Forester collector Trevor Hickman to front pastedown. Otherwise a crisp, clean copy showing a touch of spotting to edges. Jacket a little toned to spine, with some chipping to head and tail of spine. Near fine. The second book by the author who would go on to create 'Hornblower'.
