Good (wraps tanned; scuffed & smudged. front wrap has large, pencil name/notation to upper edge w/ swirl & other light pencil marks. corners rubbed w/ creasing. spine darkened; has handwritten black pen title. spine creased; top rubbed; slight flapped tear to lower edge, tail has small amount of erosion. shelf-wear/scuffing to lower textblock edge). cream wraps w/ green & yellow illustration w/ black printing. approx 42 unpaginated pgs w/ 8 bw plates. Spine glue beginning to crack; wraps begining to separate with front having a fairly deep (approximately 6inch) crack. Wraps are fragile. Back of title page has pencil handwritting/notation that appears to accompany a laid-in postcard illustrated with a Batetela wood carving. Pages remain fairly bright. Remains tightly bound. A scarce catalogue of this important exhibition.

In 1903, Stewart Culin (1858-1929) became the founding curator of the Department of Ethnology at the Museum of the Brooklyn Institute of Arts and Sciences, now the Brooklyn Museum. He was among the first museum curators to display ethnological collections as art objects, not as ethnographic specimens, and among the first to recognize museum installation as an art form in its own right.
