This is a terrific condition copy of "The World Encompassed" by Sir Francis Drake (originally published in 1628), together with "The Relation of a Wonderfull Voiage" by William Cornelison Schouten (originally published in 1619). Nicely bound in full vellum with string ties and a gilt shield on the front cover. 1966; The World Publishing Company; Cleveland, Ohio. Also included is a 24-page booklet with "Historical Introductions" by A.L. Rowse and "Bibliographical Notes" by Robert O. Dougan.Condition:Some very light foxing to the vellum covers. Tight binding with no cracks and no loose pages. Nice interior - the pages are clean and appear unread with no issues found. The front end paper has a rectangular name/address label affixed at the top-right corner. Overall the book is in Near Fine condition. The storage box is in Fine condition - clean both inside and out with no issues found.

At the rear of the book there is a six page fold out map showing the route of the voyage of the Sir Francis Drake. Blue coloured cloth covered boards with gilt coloured titles to the back strip. This book is a reprint of the 1854 edition published by the Hakluyt Society from the original 1628 edition. As the title suggests Sir Francis Drake's recollections of the voyage around the world along with the memoirs of his chaplain. This book is part of the first series of the Hakluyt Society's first series of publications of 50 titles  this being number 16. Some minor rubbing and softening of the back strip edges with rubbing of the book corners. Very minor age toning of the text block edges and pages. Original blue stamped hardcover binding with gilt spine lettering and front cover gilt stamp of the ship "Victoria." Spine is heavily darkened and rubbed, with chipping to spine extremities and tearing at hinges; protected in custom stiff archival mylar. Illustrated with a large black & white linen-backed fold-out map. First Series, No. 16. Original subscriber's name in ink on title page, and on a Working Men's College Library bookplate on front endpaper; library label on front endpaper, and a few oval stamps in margins of text; no spine markings. Inner hinges are cracked; first few pages are loosening, but textblock remains intact. From the 1628 edition 'collected out of the notes of Master Francis Fletcher', collated with the British Museum, Sloane MS 61..
