"Made in 1846-47, with the advanced guard of the 'Army of the West.'" 43 full-page plates (3 more than called for in Howes E-145): 26 plates of buildings, landscapes, people and animals, 3 of military map sketches, 12 of illustrations of a single plant, and two with multiple plant illustrations (one of which is upside down). Pocket for foldout map present, but not the map. Rubbing to extremities with boards exposed where not covered by leather. Binding is tight, text block is square and tight. Gilt is bright. Foxing, cloth chipped at spine ends and split along rear joint. Map in very good condition, with light toning along folds, a few small splits at intersections. Wagner-Camp 148: The country west of Santa Fe had been crossed by occasional herdsmen and trappers. Parts of it were sketchily known to the Navajo and to wandering bands of Apache, but none of it had received a systematic examination by a trained observer.... Bound in recent cloth (ca 1950?), moderately soiled, with early or original label. 614pp. All 64 plates present + the 3 single page sketches & 3 folding maps (browning at folds, splitting at many folds, some chips) in the rear. This copy includes the huge folding map called for by Wagner-Camp-Becker only in the Senate edition, (but noted by Howes in some copies) "Military Reconnaissance of the Arkansas Rio del Norte and Rio Gila." Th e second map, "Sketch of part of the march & wagon road of Lt. Colonel Cooke." appears to be complete, but has smaller dimensions than WCB describes.
