There are a few small chips to the leather at the edges of the spine. The leather shows rubbing and some scuffing, with a bit of peeling to the surface of the leather in places. The text shows light foxing to the edges of some of the pages. The binding is tight and the contents complete. A solid copy of this early reprint of Fremont's explorations.; 305 pages .

Mid twentieth century blue binding beginning with title page [unpaginated page 5]; "A Report on An Exploration of the Country Lying Between the Missouri River and the Rocky Mountains..." (pp [7-8] 9-85); "Catalogue of Plants (pp 87-101; "A Report of the Exploring Expedition to Oregon and Norther California..." (pp 103-290); and "Table of Distances" (291-294). Title page is darkened, and moisture tide marks are seen on the first half of the leaves. Text and images remain clear. A typed note is laid in from bookseller Bob Marsh of Topeka, Kansas circa 1960s in which he states that this copy is a variant edition, being complete with the above stated portions. Henry Polkinhorn, Washington: ., 1845 278 p. 8vo. Disbound. Xlib. Contemporary edition published by a commercial publisher, without plates or maps. John Charles Frémont (18131890), first became known as 'the Pathfinder', for his expeditions west of the Missouri River. His second expedition pushed beyond the Rocky Mountains; then north to Fort Vancouver (Canada); and then south into Mexican-held California. Frémont's detailed accounts were accessible to the non-specialist and still make interesting reading. This edition omits scientific portions which were altogether astronomical, scientific, and/or philosophical, and, therefore, not adapted for general utility'. Both he and Kit Carson, his guide, became famous for these Western Explorations. He later (1856) ran as the first Republican candidate for the presidency. Wagner-Camp 115: 3; Howes F-370. W146.

Gales and Seaton. Good+. 1845. Hardcover. 1845 first edition. Original black cloth binding. Rebacked, with the original cloth spine laid over. There is scattered foxing, heavy in places, to the text. Two folding maps are present missing the large folding map and two other maps). A landmark Western Americana publication.; Senate Ex. Doc. 174 .

Washington: Henry Polkinhorn. Good. 1845. Hardcover. Variant that falls between Wagner-Camp 115: 3 and 115: 4. Variant is published by Henry Polkinhorn in Washington; printed on the wraps is "Second Edition" and "Reprinted from the Official Copy" after the title; title page reads: title [rule] second edition- reprinted from the official copy. Rebound in red buckram with original blue wraps bound in. Boards have light shelfwear; original wraps have heavy chipping and soiling and have been repaired with archival tape in multiple places; text block has moderate foxing. This is one of the contemporary editions published by a commercial publisher, without plates or maps. Fremont explored the Wind River Mountains and South Pass in Wyoming, employing Kit Carson as a guide. Returning the following year, passing the Great Salt Lake, he followed the Snake and Columbia Rivers to Fort Vancouver. First House edition of this famous report. 1845. Complete in original binding except for the gigantic map which is available in full size color thick glossy paper professional reproduction ($25 extra if desired). Pagination: 583 pages, 22 plates, 4 maps, all blanks present. Includes fascinating pencil diagram of oil rig on back of map. Oil rig drawing titled "Sheffield Oil Company. Warren(?), Co., Pa." That pencil drawing is the only interior writing or ownership marking anywhere in the book. Condition is a mixed bag. Original half leather marbled boards show heavy wear and looks like they were professionally rehinged in the distant past. Binding is sound. Pages show moderate to heavy toning and foxing. Some plates have weird 'dot' foxing I have never seen elsewhere (see scan). Marbled endpapers. A nice well maintained copy suitable for reading and research with a cool drawing. Book condition: Good ex-law library copy with creased spine affecting text and short tears in spine ends. Edges lightly rubbed and bumped, and small loss from head of front cover. Hinges cracked but holding. Library stamps on front pastedown, first page of index, and on head and foot of text. Pages lightly spotted and faintly moisture stained along fore edge. Foldout map of Iowa is torn in a three-inch arc. A few light notes in pencil on first couple of pages. All 22 plates present. Four of five maps present. Wagner/Camp 115:2, Sabin 25845.

Blind stamped cloth covers with about one half inch of the cloth missing at the crown of the spine. Corners are a little bumped. The cloth also shows some slight chips along the joint of the covers at the spine. Inked names on end leaves. Scattered light foxing and offsetting, though contents are generally clean. Volume remains fairly tight. . First Edition. Cloth - Hard Cover. Fair/No Dust Jacket.

Washington, D. C.: Senate of the United States. Very Good with no dust jacket. 1845. Hardcover. Book has leather spine and boards are mottled colored. Cover is worn on all corners and edges. Pages have browned and have foxing. I have checked for missing pages ( 527-572 have been torn out ). Many of the pages have not been cut either on the top or the edge. I don't have a list of the maps or plates to check for them but there were no spots that I could tell whether something had been removed. If you have a list and are interested in the book. I will look for them ; 8vo 8" - 9" tall; 693 pages .

Fremont's narrative is one of the most important of western explorations, chronicling his trips over the Oregon Trail and into the Great Basin. A small quarto of 9 by 5 3/4 inches with a prior owner's book plate on the first free end page and very light rubbing to the cloth at the head and heel of the spine and with foxing to the first 20 pages of the text and the final 14 pages of the text.
