Stated first printing on the copyright page. The original price of $2.50 is still present on the front flap. DJ shows scuffing and wear, mainly to the edges and corners, paper is darkened with some scuff marks. There is also minor chipping to the spine edges. Dark blue cloth boards underneath are clean with only minor edge and corner bumps/wear. The internal binding is good, no hinge issues. No signatures or bookplates, no library markings, no handwriting, no remainder marks. Pages are toned due to age and also the type of paper used, as is book was printed during the wartime.

Gertrude Stein remained in southeastern France during World War II though she was a potential target of persecution and had been advised to leave Nazi-occupied France. Here in a series of personal anecdotes, she recalls what she and the people of France endured between 1940 and 1944 during the German Occupation. Boards are clean. Binding is tight. Interior clean and bright. Dust jacket is not intact but included.

Foxing on topedge, sunning at the spine ends from dust jacket loss, boards bowed, very good in a good only dust jacket with loss at the crown, a 2½" chip at the bottom of rear panel and foot of the spine, and a few small tears.
