The 46p index titled "Varieties of the Human Race" is authored by James G. Percival. Text moderately soiled & foxed. One of the woods before tp with a long horizontal tear repaired on verso with archival tissue, two more loosening. Cover spine heel frayed 1/8", other extrems scuffed. Both inner hinge papers cracked. Hinges still sound. .

Condition is GOOD+ ; front joint weak, covers clean with average edge wear. Binding solid. Title pg has some water stains along joint, text has foxing and the plates are generally fairly toned. Hist. [3], 4-406, [3], 2-46, [2] (pages of publisher's advertisements) pp. Full contemporary sheep with gilt lettering and decorations on the spine; all edges yellow. Illustrated with a frontispiece and seven plates. With passages on Nepal, Italy, Afghanistan, China, and various other places. Rubbing to the binding and the leaves somewhat brittle, two leaves with a tear.

Woodcuts; 12mo 7" - 7½" tall; 603 pages; 12mo in full leather. 2 volumes, complete. 292; 311 pp. Uniformly bound in period marbled calf with red morocco title labels to spines. Lacks the map of the world called for in Vol I, but the woodcut engravings of unusual rituals and customs complete as issued. Upper board of Vol I only tenuously attached by cords; light rubbing and wear to leather at extremities. A few superficial instances of worming to the leather of Vol I and a small half-dime area of predation loss to leather of upper board, Vol II. Some closed tears to endpapers of Vol I and moderate toning to first and last several leaves. Here and there in both volumes are scattered instances of spotting and toning but generally light. A signature in Vol II starting slightly with some furring to the front edge of two plates. Over 40 woodcuts. G+ .
