Thumb marking present. Back hinge is cracked. Boards have mild edge wear with slight rubbing to surfaces. There is bumping to corners and crushing to spine ends. Tanning to spine and edges causing discolouration. Gilt lettering is darkened. Surface damage to front board.

Complete in one volume. Illustrated with frontispiece and 8 plates. The subject, John Wilson, had been Professor of Moral Philosophy at the University of Edinburgh. Some fraying to spine ends, else a tight, clean copy of this biography. Reprint. Cloth. Very Good/No Jacket. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall.

W. J. Widdleton, New York, 1863. First Edition. Hardcover. Good. Blind stamped pebble green cloth with gilt stamped spine lettering. The volume is bumped at the spine ends and the lettering is somewhat subdued. The endpapers are pinched at the gutter, there is light foxing at the pastedowns, endpapers, and first few leaves, and a bookseller's label is embossed on the first two endpapers. The volume is over-opened at the preface. Some leaves have jagged edges from being rough cut and, yet, others are uncut. First American edition.

Exterior shows minor wear and spotting, corners and edges are lightly bumped and worn as well. Internal binding is good and text pages are tight. Only hinge issue noted is at the front board hinge where there is a very small opening at the very top which measures less than one half-inch. Pages are tone due to age and some foxing and spotting is present, though mainly limited to the end pages and pastedowns. No signatures or bookplates present, no handwriting or library markings. Frontispiece still has tissue guard in place and attached.
