Binding sturdy, square and tight. 570 pp., 38 pp. local Japanese ads, all maps and plans, some foldout, present, including larger fold-out map in rear pocket. Previous owner's name/address on obverse of initial foldout map: Homer Laughlin, Jr., son of the founder of the then-ubiquitous Homer Laughlin China Company.

XI + 555 + 38 (ads) pp. Illustrated with 30 maps, plans and numerous illustrations. Hardcover bound in a red flexicloth.  Covers lightly rubbed and soiled with gilt on spine dulled and with wear to all edges and spine ends including some fraying and small tears to spine ends. Internally, age toning to half title but otherwise pages relatively clean and free of previous owners marks or signatures.  The binding is tight with hinges intact but is cracked on page 290/291. All maps are present as called for and in very good condition. Rear pocket on back cover has split but map is present albeit with a tear to one of the edges, which does intrude slightly into the map. Generally clean and showing little use. Near very good condition.

Legatura in tela editoriale con titoli in oro al piatto a al dorso. Sporadiche bruniture, tagli bruniti. Alcune delle mappe hanno il dorso brunito e qualche minimo taglio nei solchi delle pieghe  ma sono in ottime condizioni e assolutamente consultabili. Ottava edizione riveduta e parzialmente riscritta di una delle classiche guide turistiche giapponesi di tutti i tempi. Testi in inglese.

Binding ever so slightly edgeworn; ownership signature/address on front flyleaf. A tight and quite nice eighth revised edition of one of the all-time classic Japanese travel guides. Several of the larger foldout maps have discreet, expert archival mends on versos, but all are present and attractive.

The 'Handbook for Travellers in Japan' was first issued in 1891 and ran through several editions in quick succession. Chamberlain was a professor of Japanese at Tokyo Imperial University and was a pioneering scholar of the Ainu and Ryukyuan languages. This work is one of several related to Japan he wrote. Illustrated, with 26 maps and plans including a folding frontispiece and large folding map to the pocket at the rear.Collated, complete.This work was published as a part of 'Murray's Handbooks for Travellers', a series of travel guide books published in London by John Murray beginning in 1836.
