Herndon (1818-1891) was Lincoln's law partner, as well as one of his many biographers. What distinguished him from Lincoln's other biographers was his well-known penchant to conduct first-hand interviews with sources, and for his use of primary materials, a practice which was evident even during his days of practicing law.
