Second edition, full leather, Troy, New York, 1797. Includes the occasionally missing frontis. Condition is Good or better: original full leather boards in above average condition with modest general wear. Only the bottom front corners show slightly more than minimal wear. The other corners, edges, spine and hinges are sound. Binding is sound. Leather label on spine still legible although that is not well seen on images. Interior is likewise in good condition. Only writing is old faded ink signature on back free blank. No other writing; mild to moderate foxing throughout. The laid cotton paper pages are still supple and easily read. The title page has a 3 inch closed tear expertly repaired (see image). There are some minor edge tears seen throughout but none affecting text. Paginates: blanks(2), frontis, (i)-180, blank(1). Frontispiece engraving "The AUTHOR Relating the HISTORY of his TRAVELS to his Friend" present (often missing). Full leather binding with red leather label and simple gold ruling on spine. Previous owner name "John S. Popkin March 1798" inked on verso of title page. Occasional spotting and light browning throughout. One small hole affecting a few letters on one leaf (pages 141/2). Overall a very nice copy. Full leather. An early recounting of a trip to Africa by an American. The second edition, published the same year as the Philadelphia first edition. Sabin (30956). The title page notes Hawkins has "since become Blind ; and for whose benefit it is now published by his Friends." Quarter tan leather and blue marbled paper covered boards, 12 mo, vii, [2], 10-179 pp. plus 1 page errata (with paper repair) at rear. Lacking the frontis illustration. Account of the authors travels from Charleston to West Africa between 1793-1795 to the land of the Ibo's, and his observations of the war then in progress between the Ebo and Golo kings. Hawkins gives much information about the customs and social life of the people of West Africa, as well as the slave trade. He returned to America with a shipload of slaves, having gone blind from some illness contracted during his voyages. Owner's name front paste-down and early owner's name, dated 1799, on title page. Title page and page 11 have early paper repairs. Several pages of the introduction have closed tears at the outer margin. This copy in a later 19th century binding, with newer endpapers.
