Paper splitting at spine ends, slight corner wear. Endpages toned. A PO has inked a third verse to the poem on p. 73. ; 12mo 7" - 7½" tall; 100 pages .

First edition hardback original, a Near Fine+ copy with top front point bumped, a few traces of grubbiness to rear boards, and an Ex-Libris sticker inside front cover under flap, in a Very Good+ dusty jacket with slight loss at head and top points, a few spots of grubbiness hear and there, a crease to inside front flap at bottom, a thin line of abrasion at heel; quite a nice copy for a book more than 100 years old. Not in Currey. Not in Bleiler's Guide to Supernatural Horror. Bleiler Checklist (1978), page 181. Sidney-Fryer, Emperor of Dreams, page 128. Formerly my own copy, replaced

The author's first book, a collection of 55 poems which reflect the influence of Smith's mentor, fellow California poet George Sterling. The Star-Treader was favorably reviewed, with one critic proclaiming Smith the "Keats of the Pacific". Later, following the publication of his third collection of verse, Ebony and Crystal (1922), Smith received a fan letter from H.P. Lovecraft, which was the beginning of 15 years of friendship and correspondence between the two masters of dark fantasy and horror. Octavo: [100] p. with a title page printed in red and black. Original tan paper-covered boards, with decorative gilt stamping. Partially unopened. The dust jacket is toned, more so along the spine and folds, which are also a bit stained with some very faint transfer to the boards; otherwise very good.

A. M. Robertson, 1912. First Edition. Hardcover. Very Good/Good. Signed. Signed by Clark Ashton Smith at half title, with occasional hand corrections by Smith throughout. Boards tanned with rubbing, light soil, light edgewear. Spine square. Binding sound. Dust jacket good in Mylar with heavy toning, a few small spots of soil, and light edgewear including very minor chipping at spine ends and fore-edge corners. Sparsely foxed, with the mentioned authorial corrections; interior else clean and unmarked.

First edition hardback, a Very Good copy with a long crease running down the middle part of the spine and traces of wear to cloth, front hinge just starting at bottom, slight bumping at head and heel and page blocks dusty, in a Very Good dust jacket with faint soiling to front and rear, a 1/2″ x 1/8″ chip at rear heel join, shallow chipping at head, and crease to top front corner. Inscribed twice by Smith (the first apparently with a fountain pen, the second with a ballpoint): "Clark Ashton Smith/Auburn, Cal/Nov. 27th, 1912" then "For Harry Rosenberry/with sincere compliments/of Clark Ashton Smith/Apr. 14th, 1961," which was exactly four months before his death. A clean near fine partially unopened copy in paper covered boards with some slight foxing to the top edge of the pages and to the gutter of the front endpapers and in a clean near fine dust jacket with some slight toning to and along the spine. Signed by Smith on the front free endpaper in the year of publication. A nicer than usual copy of a book that was printed in an edition of 2000 copies of which approximately half perished in a fire.
