Symons' first crime novel and an acutely observed satire of the London art world of the late 1930s. Inscribed "For George Sims with very good wishes Julian Symons February 1949" Julian Symons and George Sims, antiquarian bookseller and crime novelist, were friends of many, many years. This would have been one of the earliest inscriptions to Sims. They met in connection with the papers of Symons' elder brother A. J. A. Symons (author of The Quest for Corvo). Walsdorf A1b. Square, tight and clean throughout with just a touch of wear and toning to edges. Tiny blemish to cloth on the front board. Very attractive unclipped, though unpriced, dust jacket, (7/6 net on the spine panel), has a couple of tiny chips to the spine ends. Toning to spine and moderate soiling. Still solid and complete with no creases or tears and quite scarce in any condition. A gorgeous collectable copy. (Hubin, p.288).
