This is a collection of short stories, "Punch, Brothers, Punch!" and Other Sketches by MARK TWAIN. 1878 1st edition, 2nd state; Slote, Woodman & Co.; New York. With vignettes at the beginning and end of each story. There are 9 short stories in all. The book is smaller in size - it measures 6" tall x 4 1/2" wide. With an advertisement for "Mark Twain's Patent Scrap-Book" at the back."Punch, Brothers, Punch!" is about Twain's encounter with an "earworm" (a "virus-like" jingle), and how it occupies his mind for several days until he manages to "infect" another person, thus removing the jingle from his mind.Condition:Clean covers and spine with no stains; sharp corners; bright gilt lettering on the spine. Tight binding with no cracks and no loose pages. A thin, light stain appears around page 95 at the upper and outer edges and gradually gets bigger through to the end of the book; there is also a stain at the upper-outer corner of the title page and contents page. In 1876, Twain published a short story entitled 'A Literary Nightmare', which was a fictional tale about Twain himself encountering an earworm – a jingle he couldn't get out of his head for days on end. The story was retitled and republished under the name 'Punch, Brothers, Punch' in 1878.

Housed in a cloth chemise and matching slipcase with leather label. Leather bookplate on verso of the front wrap.

Edinburgh: E. & S. Livingstone, [1878]. First British Edition. stiff wraps. Slight offsetting to inscription caused by old newspaper clipping pasted to inner cover. Occasional soiling and wear. Very Good and scarce. Bound in original stiff green wraps rebacked with cloth retaining most of the original spine. INSCRIBED and SIGNED on the front free endpaper "To Rev. R. Eden, With the author's kindest regards. Mark Twain Sept. 5/78." According to BAL 3378, this edition was published in May 1878. In a 1936 sale held by the American Art Association, a copy of Clemens's Scrap Book inscribed to the Reverend Robert Eden in Sept. 1878 was sold. The Union Catalog of Clemens Letters makes no other mention of Eden.
