Very Good/No Dust Jacket. 5 hardcover portfolios each containing 80 loose color plates as well as a softcover pamphlet containing descriptions of each plate. 5 matching blue cloth portfolios with dark green ties. Smithsonian Institute emblem on front covers. Titles in gold on spine. A total of 400 beautiful loose color plates, some slight wave to plates. Plate description pamphlets in each volume show some light edge wear and soil to covers, text pages are clean. Volume I plate pamphlet states "Text only for volume one reprinted 1950" on verso of title page. All other pamphlet volumes and plates themselves are marked 1925. Each of these portfolio volumes are contained in plain black cardboard boxes that are chipped and worn. A few split edges, chips missing. Volume one box is missing one edge completely. Always carefully wrapped and shipped in cardboard boxes to protect your purchase.

In the bindings of the famous Lindley Library, the Royal Horticultural Society's research library, with their small bookplate (cancelled) in each volume. Contemporary three- quarter brown morocco, raised bands, marbled endpapers; top edges gilt; gilt lettering on spines. A uniformly very good to near fine set (some rubbing to covers; minor wear to extremities; minor dampstain to edges near spine head of each volume, not affecting the contents). The color prints are crisp and clean. "North American Wild Flowers" contains color-printed reproductions of Mary Walcott's watercolors with her brief descriptions of each, giving information not only about the plant itself but about the circumstances of painting it.
