1880. Intact tear on autograph page.. A grouping of materials related to Whittier. The first is a cabinet card with Whittier's signature at base. The second is a 4 3/4" x 7 1/2" page from an autograph album with what seems to be an original verse penned and signed by John G. Whittier, Amesbury 1878. The reverse has an drawing by Alice C. Boynton, Boston MA. The third is a 4" x 4 1/2" piece of shingle with a pen and ink somewhat naive drawing of "The Captain's Well". It is captioned "And I knew in that vision beyong the sea, The very place where my well must be". Penned on the reverse "Picture of the 'Captian's Well' at Amesbury on a shingle from John G. Whittier's House in Amesbury". This is being sold only as an illustration, there has been no attempt to confirm that the wood shingle is from Whittier's home. The final item is a snippet from a letter penned by Whittier.

Descripción:
Jersey City, NJ, 1877. A friendship album belonging to Martha Durand Tibbetts (1859-1929), which is completely full of entries by her friends. The bulk of the entries date from 1873-1877, with a few outliers until 1910, and most of the authors of the entries are from Jersey City, NY, or New York. As Martha's nickname was "Mousie", some of the entries are addressed as such. One entry in particular is addressed by a small drawing of a brown mouse. Additionally several entries reference the White Star Social Club (W. S. S. C), as it appears that Martha was a member. The entries consist of short verses of poetry or song, some of which appear to be original works. Three of the album pages feature drawn in piles of visiting cards, of which people have filled in their names and date. Six pages feature drawings, done in pen. These illustrations tend to be small, and several have multiple tiny illustrations on one page. Of note is one such entry with five tiny illustrations, all of a fantastical nature. For… Leer más

Cattaraugus County, NY, 1842. General wear. Letter folds.. A real estate agreement between the couple Moses and Emma Beecher and Isaac Curry which sells a total of approximately 2,956 acres of land from different portions of about 40 different plots of land within Cattaraugus County, NY. Due to the complexities of the amount of land being sold a surveyor was brought in, and the resulting agreement is extremely detailed, sometimes listing out each acre within each plot of land out down to the hundredth of acre. The contract includes small diagrams of the 40 plots and the sections of them being sold to Curry. At the end of the agreement is a section which verifies that Emma Beecher was "privately examined, separate and a part from her husband, acknowledges that she executes said instrument without any fear or compulsion of her said husband." While this does acknowledge that Emma must have owned a portion of this land with her husband, it is unclear how Emma original came to own the land being sold.… Leer más
