Amsterdam, August 1818; 12mo; four sections: Het Nieuwe Testament ofte alle Boeken des Nieuwen Verbonts onses Heeren Jesu Christi (1818, pp [1] being the engraved title, 2-360);/ Het Boek der Psalmen, nevens de Gezangen (1836, pp [1-3], 4-408;)/ Evangelische Gezangen om nevens het Boek der Psalmen bij den openbaren Godsdienst (1836, pp [viii, 1], 2-280); / Catechismus, of onderwijzing in de Christelijke Leer, die in Nederlandsche Gereformeerde Kerken en Scholen geleerd wordt (nd, pp [1], 2-83). Old panelled leather, spine and front board detached, other board missing, gold edges; internally tight and clean but with extensive browning, generally fairly light, throughout.

For A Mosely, London, 1676; 8vo, pp [xx], 320; full calf, covers badly worn or with parts missing on the corners and by the spine, two ties broken and the front board weak and somewhat loose in consequence; part of the title page is missing and has been carefully repaired with old paper, the missing text having then been added in ink in approximation of the type; there are similar small repairs on two other early sheets but without loss of any text. Blank opening leaf absent but with the engraved emblematic frontispiece facing the prologue present. First published in English in 1647, the work is a fine translation of a famous Italian pastoral work. Fanshawe was a royalist, siding with Charles during the civil war and subsequently held various royal and diplomatic appointments. He translated the Lusiad of Camoens from the Portuguese and was known also as a speaker of Spanish.

Soft cover. Good. 258x300mm, pp 32, self-covered; b&w and some coloured illustrations; staples rusty but a clean, good copy. With a 3pp article by Bertrand Russell "The Next 50 Years". Sadly his predictions were a bit wide of the mark - "Our most eminent living philosopher forsees the possible end of hunger and poverty if only war can be outlawed and science, harnessed to freedom of thought, allowed to be used for the good of mankind instead of for evil." - as, despite his friendship with Keynes, he failed to allow for neoclassical economics and its pernicious political offshoot, neoliberalism. Hardback. Very Good. Cornish Brothers, Birmingham, 1880, [first edition, privately printed]; 8vo, pp [viii], (9)-577; good later binding in half brown pigskin, green marbled boards and end papers, spine decorated gilt and with raised bands, top edge gilt; lacks half title; slight browning or dust marking in places but nevertheless a very good copy of what was to become a minor Victorian classic, the story set in the time of Charles I. Shorthouse, 1834-1903, came from a Quaker manufacturing family in Birmingham (actually Edgbaston), duly entering the family business. However, he and his wife moved to the Church of England in 1861 identifying themselves with the "Oxford School of High Churchmen". He also began to suffer from epilepsy and duly left his industrial work to write, spending the decade to about 1876 working on "John Inglesant". Société d'Edition Les Belles Lettres, Paris, 1934, first thus; 8vo, pp x, 26, plus Contents and imprint; published with orange paper wrappers, now bound in dark green cloth, the front board stamped with a gilt image of a she-wolf; spine dulled and the front board slightly faded at the foot but nevertheless a good to very good copy with some pages opened rather carelessly and with others unopened. This work is a French translation of the Latin of (purportedly) Seneca the Younger's political satire on Claudius, the Apocolcyntosis (divi) Claudii here with the Latin on facing pages.

This edition is one of twelve copies, this copy being numbered 1. 4to, pp xvi, 316; printed on thick imitation vellum paper and quarter bound with a vellum spine over brown laid paper boards and with a simple printed paper label to the spine, top edge gilt; eight full page coloured plates with tissue guards, a full page steel engraving and another in photogravure and over 100 other illustrations, mainly in the text but some also as full page plates; spine vellum somewhat speckled, corners a little rubbed or bumped, occasional light foxing, very slight cracking between signatures b and B but otherwise firm, clean and in very good condition. Neatly written dedication in ink manuscript on the front end paper to Lady Beatrice Taylor "with affectionate wishes from Pearl Mary Teresa Craigie November 26 1903". A & J Churchill, at the Black Swan, Paternoster Row, London, 1705; small 4to (125x200mm), pp [vi], 642, 176; simple contemporary panelled calf without labels, somewhat rubbed and both hinges partially cracked externally but the joints still firm, small patch of damage to the front cover at the lower inner corner; lacks front free end paper and somewhat browned throughout; a fair copy, decent enough. First published in this form in 1663 following Schrevel's initial publication in 1654. Hill added some 8,000 words to the work.

Soft cover. Good. 140 x 215mm, pp 144, light card covers, signatures of 32pp but also glued in parts; base of spine a little torn and somewhat loose for the lower third, some light browning, particularly at both ends, nevertheless in good condition. Contains a 9pp page essayby Bertrand Russell, "On Catholic and Protestant Sceptics" as well as other contributions by David Garnett, André Maurois and others. Third edition, considerably enlarged and improved. 8vo, xvi, 283 and viii, 323pp; half thin calf, marbled boards, the leather surfaces somewhat skinned and rubbed in places, spines dry and lacking the label on each; front joint of vol 1 slightly weak but still holding well. First published in 1795 this is an extended essay on art, science, education, philosophy, literature and more with commentary on historic and contemporary figures written by the father of the later prime minister, Benjamin.

No Binding. Fair. Printed for R Butters, Fleet Street, London, no date; small 6mo, 48pp; disbound from a larger work, perhaps a collection of plays such as in a volume of "The Theatrical Magazine" an advertisement for which appears on the final page, and in consequence without covers; slight damage (without text loss) to the title page and a tiny worm track affecting the very foot of the last six leaves; outer pages somewhat dust marked and with some further dust marking and evidence of handling internally. Based on and adapted from Voltaire's five act tragedy "Mahomet" - which was first staged in April 1741 - Miller's version opened almost exactly three years later and a few days before his death aged around 40. The fifth act of his version was completed by his friend John Hoadley. There's no indication of the date of printing but as Butters's business was at 79 Fleet Street at least during the period 1782 to 1795 (later moving to 22 Fetter Lane) this window… Leer más

Gardner, Darton, London, no date [1896]; 8vo, pp viii, 288, [10, being publisher's adverts]; original fawn buckram gilt decorated in Arts & Crafts style, somewhat dulled, particularly on the spine; internally generally firm but pages a little foxed and dust or other stained occasionally; Sunday School presentation label dated Easter 1897 inside on the front board. Coleridge, the grand-daughter of Samuel Taylor, was a conservative and anti-feminist writer of domestic and light fiction, a friend of and occasional collaborator with Charlotte Yonge, much concerned with expressing moral attitudes and several of whose books were published by the SPCK.

T Durham, London, 1769, first edition; 8vo, pp xvi, 168; full calf, gilt spine, marbled end papers, one board detached and the other missing, spine badly rubbed and lacks label, internally firm and clean although with some light browning as usual throughout; early, probably first, owner's name (Ant. Highmore) in manuscript on the front end paper and with the note "from the Author" and the relevant name, perhaps in another hand, added later. Highmore is likely to be the painter and draughtsman, son of the portrait and historical painter Joseph and father to Anthony, the legal writer and abolitionist. John Hope (1739-1785) was the grandson of Charles Hope, first earl of Hopetoun, and became MP for Linlithgowshire in 1768 in succession to his father being, however, unseated a couple of years later, a fact he attributed to loss of patronage and to angering other members of the House on account of his support for John Wilkes, the radical journalist and MP who in 1776 was… Leer más

Secker & Warburg, London, 1961, first edition; 8vo, pp 352; dustwrapper slightly dulled or and with a very little fraying at the edges but a very good copy. The book is Wilson's fourth novel and deals with events immediately preceding a nuclear attack on London, something which leads to a dystopian dictatorship and the incarceration of prisoners at the zoo, by then transformed into a concentration camp. It was in 1983 made into a BBC television serial.

Faber & Faber, London, 1942, first edition; 8vo, pp 84; original green cloth, spine gilt; some water staining along the foot of the whole volume, generally not ordinarily noticeable but directly affecting the first and last two leaves and the end papers through the leaking in of some scattered pink colouring and with some similar but milder effect on both boards. Ownership inscription on the front ep, Dennis Sykes, May 1942. Pinned to the second front ep is a photograph of Natasha Letvin, Spender's second wife, at the Dartington Festival, clipped from Picture Post, June 1943, and also a 3pp holograph rendering of Spender's 1928 poem, "The Truly Great", annotated "S. Spender" at the foot.
