Handsome 24th printing of this popular boys' carpentry and craft project book, entirely in German, whose title translations: "Self Is the Man: A New Activities Book for Sunshine and Rainy Weather." These craft projects will strike today's readers as remarkably difficult and advanced for the intended juvenile audience. 1924 ownership name/place on front pastedown of a young boy of Middle Amana, the noted German community of Iowa.

Tissue-guarded chromolithograph frontispiece, numerous illustrations and figures, plans, large (17" X 14¼") chromolithograph laid in loose. Very good overall. Tight and nice, only flaw a homely 3½" water line at upper right of front board; nonauthorial Christmas 1912 gift inscription auf Deutsch on half-title page. A tight and nice first edition of this collection of children's craft projects, entirely in German. Title translation: "The Little Paper Worker. Instructions for Making All Kinds of Paper Work, Mounting Maps and Plans, Making Boxes, Cases, and so on." The rarely-present accompanying color print noted on title page is present and lovely, a bright chromolithograph which when cut out, folded and assembled creates a "Modellir-Carton, Puppen-Stube, (Theater.)" -- basically a paper mock-up of a small puppet theater. Other than light age toning to endpapers, the book itself is in exceptionally tight and pristine condition; jacket shows mild edgewear and age toning. Astonishingly fresh, bright turn-of-the-century copy of this fiction (whose title translates "The Ship's Carpenter: The Wreck") by the prolific and popular German novelist and travel writer (1816-72). Color front board image of seaman fleeing a blazing ship onto a lifeboat is outstanding and the plentiful illustrations by famed German artist and illustrator Planck (1870-1956), probably the best known German book artist of the early 20th century, are delightful. Mild binding edgewear only, else internally tight and near fine. Attractive and tight twelfth edition of this well-known dictionary by the famed German lexicographer and grammarian (1764-1829), with assistance in later editions such as this by his famed son, Karl Wilhelm Ludwig Heyse, and C.A.F. Mahn. Title translates roughly as "General Germanized and Explanatory Foreign Dictionary with Designation for Pronunciation and Emphasis of Words along with Exact Statement of Origin and Formation." Done up in classic two-column format. An exceptional copy.

Dark green pebble-grain cloth with elaborate gilt lettering and decorations and black front board decorations. 429pp, (3pp). Numerous illustrations, line drawings, floral endpapers. Very good. Quite minor edgewear only -- overall tight and attractive, with all gilt bright. Handsome copy of the eighteenth annual volume of this heavily-illustrated periodical, 24 issues, entirely in German. Title translates "The City of God: Monthly Magazine for the Catholic People for Entertainment, Instruction and Encouragement.

Eklingen, Germany: Verlag von J.F. Schreiber, n.y.. Hardcover. 4to. Quarter red cloth with glossy pictorial paper over boards, decorative dust jacket. 13pp (rectos only). Numerous chromolithographs, decorative endpapers. Very good/good-. Binding faintly edgeworn, but overall tight and bright; jacket heavily edgeworn, with numerous edge tears and small edge chips, showing (on verso) many expert archival mends -- thus overall quite presentable. A lovely and quite tight example of Number 31 of this publisher's children's tales, exceptionally bright and attractive. Though not dated, apparently turn of the century, circa 1890-1910. The many color chromolithographs are outstanding, and the dust jacket, despite heavy wear, is a rare survivor. Title translated as "Picture Stories for Small Children: 12 Color Pictures with Clever Children's Rhymes.

Numerus full-page tissue-guarded plates, decorative endpapers. Near fine. Front flyleaf ownership signature. Handsome and quite tight later (11th through 25th thousand) U.S. edition of this popular life of Jesus Christ, entirely in German. Oehninger (1837-1914) was a popular and prolific German writer on religious topics and this title was first published in 1902, the date that this undated printing shows on his forward -- clearly an early 20th century printing.

Outer wrappers (only) show varying edgewear; last 3 with folding chart at rear; second issue (only) lacks rear wrapper. Four complete issues, entirely in German, for the 110th, 111th, 112th and 117th annual assemblies of the German Evangelical-Lutheran Ministry of Pennsylvania and Adjacent States. (Third issue, 112th, was published in Lancaster by Johann Bär's Söhnen and the fourth, 117th, by Trexler, Harlacher und Weisser in Allentown.) Very good. Quite minor binding edgewear, else tight and internally near fine. Handsome copy, entirelty in German, of this young adult life of the 16th century Reformation leader by this popular German author of the day (1940-1929). The color plates are magnificent. Undated, but clearly turn of the century (as the front flyleaf ownership signature dated Christmas 1905 confirms). Quite charming.

Faint jacket edgewear only. Evidence of erased pencil underlinings throughout; ownership signature on each front flyleaf and nonauthorial gift inscription on each half-title page. Modern reprint edition, entirely in German, of this 1840 account of the German explorer and naturalist's trip up the Missouri River with artist Karl Bodmer.

Bibliographically-challenged German-language edition of this old children's rhyme, whose title translates "Bake, Bake a Cake: Old Rhymes with New Pictures." Likely published in Germany around the turn-of-the-century, to which a pencilled ownership signature dated 1903 on front flyleaf lends credence. Apparently published without title page, though the publisher identifies this title as "No. 839" on the front wrapper. It also follows the quirky binding pattern of the first three text pages running on the left-hand side, followed by a charming centerfold (pp. 7-8) and the final three text pages running on the right-hand side. Numerous small illustrations throughout are bright and quaint.

Binding (only) a tad edgeworn and lightly soiled. The Life of Jesus in Pictures and Words." Apparently published without a title page. Undated, but ownership signature on inside front board is dated 1893. The chromolithographic plates are superb and bright.

Printed in alternating pages of brown ink and blue ink (with illustrations accordingly those colors), this German language publication is undated but circa turn-of-the-century to early 20th century. Title translates "Happy Childhood: Amusing and Instructive for the Children's World.

A tight, attractive copy of this bibliographically-challenged text of words and music, entirely in German, title translation "My Favorite Children's Songs with Guitar Accompaniment." Kapp-Verlag in Benshein, Germany published this title in blue pictorial paper over boards in 1983, so apparently this is a cryptic reprint of some sort.

Konstanz: Verlag von Carl Hirsch, n.y.. Hardcover. 8vo. Grey cloth with gilt lettering and elaborate multi-color pictorial stamping. 144pp. Decorative endpapers. Very good. Mild edgewear. A tight and nice later printing of the second volume (only), entirely in German, of these nativity narratives. Undated, but circa 1910. Title translation: "From Heaven Above to Earth I Come: Tales of the Winning and Beatific Might of the Christmas Gospels." Delightful front board graphic shows three shepherds reclining under a tree at night to watch their flock as one star outshines the others and the branches above them are filled with a heavenly host of angels.

A tight and nice later printing of the second volume (only, out of four) of this slim gathering, entirely in German, title translated "Who Wants to be Entertained? Come to me; I invite you! Children's Stories and Rhymes." Undated, but circa 1910. Quite charming.

Blind-embossed red cloth with gilt lettering and decorations. viii, 576pp. Chromolithograph frontispiece, numerous illustrations (several color chromolithographs). Very good. Spine faintly sunned; ownership signature on front pastedown. A tight and handsome first edition of the 34th volume of this kid's annual, entirely in German. Title translation: "Youth Leaves for Entertainment and Instruction." German children's book author Braun (1815-86) first published her "Jugendblätter für christliche Unterhaltung und Belehrung" annual children's magazine in 1854, which ceased upon her death -- until the series resumed (without the "christliche") "Unter Mitwirkung vieler Jugendfreunde" (with the participation of many young friends), simply listing Braun as founder. A lovely copy.
