Yourcenar (an anagram of her given last name, Crayencour) was a notable Belgian-French poet and translator in her own right, and was the first female member elected to the Académie Française. Bound in quarter blue cloth with gray paper over boards, in publisher's glassine. Fine overall.

Santa Barbara, CA: Simplemente Maria Press, 2024. Heebner, Mary. Three quarto vols. Each one of fifteen copies, and each signed by Mary Heebner at the colophon. A trio of Heebner's concerned meditations on the perilous status of the arctic landscape, based on two ship voyages undertaken in 2017 and 2023. In two volumes under the single title of Vanishing Tracks, Heebner mourns the current ephemerality of the polar bear. In Arctic Light, she narrates her experiences as visitor to and observer of the terrain, while impressing upon the reader how beautiful it all is, "more so knowing that it is leaving us." In Frazil: New Ice Forming, in terms both metaphorical and directly scientific she considers the regenerative cycle of water and ice and that cycle's frightening fragility. Boston, 1991. Davidson, Laura. Unique book art object, signed and dated by the artist, made from wood, acrylic, paper, ink, and metal keys. Constructed as a temple, the statuesque object has two swinging doors on which Davidson has inked a Hindu tale; this and other designs are presented over excised maps and travelogues, creating a multimedia collage. The pillared templed stands upon a platform ornamented with six keys, each labeled "a" through "d" (there are multiple for "b") to mirror the coordinate grid of the map. The whole is a companion piece to Davidson's first editioned book, To Open, completed in the same year. Fine. Housed in custom box. (12 by 10 1/4 by 3 5/8 in.; 340 x 264 x 94 mm).

Santa Cruz: Peter & Donna Thomas, 2023. Thomas, Donna. Octavo. (38)ff. One of thirty copies, signed by the Thomases at the colophon. The artists' statement describes this project as an "eco-lament" that at once honors and mourns their neighborhood temperate tidal lagoon, the loss of which appears more and more insurmountable. The representation of such looming material devastation is here treated with equal material care and attention; each section of the complex semi-accordion structure exhibits a unique paper made from different plants native to the lagoon. Accordion-bound into folio of cloth-covered boards backed in leather. Very fine.

Northampton: Ariosto Press, 1965. Young, Elaine. Octavo. (25)pp. One of 100 copies, signed by the artist. A student of Leonard Baskin, Young riffs on his dynamic and mythical style to create her own fanciful beasts, emblems of particular ornamental characters (the "Bulla" as a Papal Bull "known for its dogma," the "Homo litterarum" as an airy academic, the "Avis invulgaris" as an aristrocrat who "is habitually performing acts of charity and voting against antipoverty legislations"). Young's preface describes the contents as "hallucinogenic material...the result of a diverse program of cognitive meanderings." The first book of the press. Young's name pops up as a contributor on other Baskin-circle projects, including the Apiary Press' Certain Elizabethan and Jacobean Playwrights. Bound in full tan paper over boards with paper label at upper cover. Mild rubbing to exterior, else near fine. Bookplate of Harold Hugo, then president of the Meriden Gravure Company.

Bosham, UK: Circle Press, 2013. King, Ronald. Square small quarto. 7 unbound triptych sheets. One of thirty copies, signed by Richard Price and Ronald King. Price's verses appear alongside King's illustrations, which have been deeply embossed into the papers, mostly in blind but with choice additions of color. Each triptych articulates the case for animals presently threatened by or having already succumbed to the catastrophes of climate change: the armadillo, the emperor butterfly, the chimpanzee, the dodo, the elephant, the fox, and the goose. That the alphabetical bestiary format remains unfinished implies the continuing urgency of the matter. Sheets housed loose in embossed paper wrappers, held in chemise and slipcase. Fine.

Boston: Laura Davidson, 1991. Davidson, Laura. Small octavo. (6)pp., frenchfold. One of forty-one copies, signed by the artist. This artist's book by Davidson, her first editioned book, uses hand-printed linocuts and collages to interpret a travelogue, showing keyholes, houses, and round swirls on top of maps. Printed in three colors, the five pages of illustrations are followed by a page of text, which recites a short Hindu tale, printed in black. Bound in wooden boards, which are shaped like a house and painted black, with a leather spine. On the front cover is mounted a metal key, the words "to open" printed in pencil above the key. Fine.

Kensington, CA and Washington, DC: Liminal Press + Bindery, 2019. McAleer-Keeler, Kerry. Octavo. 45pp. One of three A. P. copies, produced in addition to the limited edition of fifty. Signed by Laser, who contributed the text, and by Camden M. Richards, who designed and produced the project. Equal parts scholarly essay and experiment in graphic and material design, the book aims to situate the reader within the vocabulary of racial privilege, to guide them toward an understanding of their own position ("White Privilege: If You Can't See It, You've Got It"), and to urge a confrontation with it on terms both interpersonal and systemic. To these ends, it employs a creative array of typefaces, printing techniques, and scanned linocut illustrations by McAleer-Keeler. Bound in flexible covers, saddle-stitched and held with an elastic ribbon, to which is affixed a custom pencil, "perfect for making copious notes about how you will utilizze your privilege to create change." Providence, RI: Ziggurat Press, 1989. (Bell, Andrew). Quarto. (32)pp. One of forty-five copies. Illustrated with seven copper engravings, originally executed by Andrew Bell, which accompanied the essay, here likewise reprinted, published in the 1797 edition of the Encyclopaedia Britannica. The former have been printed on handmade Moriki paper, the latter on Rives and Ingres. The result is a publication suitably honorific to its source material, one aesthetically fit to the task and engineered with a mathematical eye apt for both book and building construction. Bound in decorative papers over boards with three exposed brown leather bands, and embossed copper "illustration" inset to upper cover. Trace edgewear, else near fine.

Flörsheim: Peter Malutzki, 2014. Malutzki, Peter. Octavo. (40)pp. One of twenty copies, numbered and signed by the artist. Malutzki reprints spam emails from Hong Kong, machine-translated into German and then "back-translated" into a "not less funny" English. Added are collages, all original to the copy, made up of letter envelopes and Chinese Yuan notes. Certainly humorous at the outset, the book also bears insidious traces of the porosity between the internet, governmental control, capital exchange, and the slipperiness of "authenticity." Bound in patterned paper over boards, with paper label. Remote rubs to corners, else fine.

(N.p.): Two Ponds Press, 2020. Skaar, Anneli. 16mo. Unpaginated. From an edition of 60 copies, this is one of twenty "regular" copies, with mounted copperplate map and translucent artist statement together with the book in a dropback box. Among his many achievements—Arctic exploration, advocacy for an independent Norway, significant contributions to the field of oceanography—Fridtjof Nansen's greatest remains his humanitarian efforts on behalf of refugees. At the end of the First World War, and at the request of the League of Nations to which he was a delegate, Nansen began organizing a response to the incredible population of displaced and dispossessed individuals. His efforts resulted in the first passport for stateless persons, a crucial intervention in recording the identity and nationality of those without documentary proof so that refugees could cross borders and apply for visas legally. With three full-page and two tailpieces in full color by Ely, who lucidly emphasizes the psychedelic and geometric motifs of Berrigan's short story. Designed, printed, and bound by Caliban proprietor Mark McMurray in printed paste-paper boards backed by orange cloth. Fine.

(Munich): Bremer Presse, 1924. Simons, Anna. Two small folio volumes. 486; 372pp. One of 615 copies printed in Greek with titles by Anna Simons. These beautiful volumes are printed on Zanders handmade paper in a 16-point Greek type designed for the Press. Colin Franklin describes the Bremer "Homerou poiesis" as "magnificent examples of controlled printing." Touch of sunning to upper boards, else a fine, bright set in original blue boards with paper lettering piece on spine. (Franklin, p. 163; Lehnacker 15 &16).

(British Columbia): Barbarian Press, 2021. English, Andy. Octavo. xvii, (5), 271, cclxxi, (vi)pp. From an edition of 105 copies, this is one of 62 comprising the deluxe state, and thus accompanied by a portfolio of strikes of the engravings, which are supplied by Andy English and appear throughout the volume. Molly Holden (1927-1981) was a British poet, whose prolific poetic career (the present publication only represents approximately a third of her oeuvre) was informed yet unhindered by her diagnosis of multiple sclerosis. Many of Holden's poems reflect upon her condition, meditating upon feelings of capitivity and liberation, mortality and joy, the demise of the personal body and the richness of relationship. A powerful force of disability advocacy within and enabled by the lyric form, here presented by the Barbarian Press in its usual precise and evocative typography and craftsmanship. A contemplative, grief-stricken, and urgent endeavor in environmental advocacy, textual analysis, innovative printing, and craft assemblage, Skaar's Island Whale takes as its archival template the aesthetic of the American logbook, in which each entry records human interactions with and impositions upon whales. The sources attend to the long historical sweep of the notion of whales as monsters, beasts to be tamed, huge predators of the sea, and, thus, threats to oceanic industries; the excerpts include the Babylonian Talmud, the Icelandic Saga of Örvar-Odd, Sinbad the Sailor, and Paradise Lost. Each of the passages connects whales to the perceived sinking of islands, the illusion of the whale as the island itself, and here Skaar situates her historical treatment within the current climate crisis, connecting the ecological importance of cetaceans to the very real vulnerability of islands like Kiribati, and… Leer más

From an edition of 55 copies, this is one of twenty comprising the "Written" issue, featuring original calligraphy by Martin Jackson on the printed pages. Signed by Jackson on the colophon page. The text is Alfred W. Pollard's essay, which first appeared in 1921 as the introduction to the catalogue of William Andrews Clark's Kelmscott and Doves collections, printed by John Henry Nash. Pollard offers a summary of the typographical and aesthetic aims of both presses, the common denominator of each being Emery Walker; this edition presents the opportunity to examine a specific example from both presses—each of which Pollard references in his essay. The leaves included here are from the Kelmscott edition of The Golden Legend and from The English Bible, considered by many to be the masterpiece of the Doves Press. (East Aurora): Roycroft Printing Shop, 1896. Octavo. 72, (ii)pp. One of twelve copies printed on Japan paper. Each page has a large decorated initial lettering the style of William Morris. Title-page and colophon printed in red and black. This was the first book of the Press and took Hubbard and his partner, Harry Taber, four months to complete. The colophon states that it was printed "with no power save that of human muscle," and expresses a "Thank God!" for its completion. A scarce book and rarely seen in such good condition. Corners rubbed, minor soiling, else a lovely copy in linen-backed antique boards. Inscribed on the colophon "with kindly greetings from Elbert Hubbard." Bookplate. (McKenna 8).

Anneli Skaar, 2022. Skaar, Anneli. Quarto. 56pp. One of ten copies, signed by the artist. A monument to and mournful elegy for the practices of extraction and extinction that underwrote the settlement of California, the results of which still impact the state today. Skaar demonstrates California's inextricable connection to exploitation of the land and its animals, made obvious and ironic via the bear on the California state flag. Grizzly bears were among the first victims of the Gold Rush; William Randolph Hearst, as a marketing gimmick, assigned a reporter to hunt down the "last" grizzly, who was deemed "Monarch," after the slogan of the San Francisco Examiner. The California grizzly was declared extinct in the 1920s. Skaar tells this tale of environmental collapse and spectacle through national newspaper articles from the 1840s to 1953, when the California state flag was standardized. An essay by Boreman about the ephemeron, or Mayfly, that first appeared in A Description of Some Curious and Uncommon Creatures in 1739. Illustrated with three delicate colored etchings by Lance Hidy depicting the Mayfly and its habitat. Beautifully bound in tan linen boards, with printed paper label to front cover. Very fine in a matching linen box with gilt-stamped brown leather spine label, which shows a trace of rubbing. One of David Godine's earliest and finest private printings, which has become a scarce item.
