All edges untrimmed. Two full-page woodcut illustrations by Sir Edward-Byrnes Jones, many ornamental initials and borders designed by Morris. Printed in three colors; red, blue, and black. This first collected edition of Moore's poems, published at the request of his children, contains the first book appearance of his poem, "A Visit From St. Nicholas" ("Twas The Night Before Christmas") in a collection of his own work. This rare first edition is a PRESENTATION COPY, inscribed by Moore on the half-title page, "The Rev. Dr. Barry, with the respects of the author, Mar. 1846". Moore, a professor of Hebrew, wrote this poem in 1822 as a Christmas gift for his children. This set is edited and contains a special introduction by Wm. J. Rolfe. The set was bound by Whitman Bennett. Bottom corner of Volume 2 is bumped. Collated complete with twenty folding maps, all in very nice condition. Text illustrations and full-page maps throughout the text. London, 1938. Written on Admiralty, Whitehall stationery, 9 1/2" by 7 1/2". Creased to fold into a fourth, to fit envelope. The letter is dated 17 October 1939, just five weeks after he became First Lord of the Admiralty on 3 September 1939, the day that Great Britain declared war on Nazi Germany. The letter is addressed to Commander C.D.O. Shakespear, Royal Navy, expressing pleasure at hearing from him again and knowing that he is serving "in the present emergency". Further states "It is indeed a long time since the days when we cruised in the "Venus". In 1908, they toured the colonial possessions in the Mediterranean together on the "Venus", an Eclipse class cruiser commissioned in 1897. They sailed from Malta to Cypress to Port Said, through Red Sea to Aden. We purchased the letter for our client at Sotheby's in London, 24 July 1995, see catalogue item #445. Philadelphia: Thomas Dobson, 1973. FIVE VOLUMES. Four are uniformly bound in brown calf. Volume 2 is bound in 1/4 tan leather over marbled boards. Volume 1 is a second American edition, 1794, old laced repair to front joint. Volume 2 is a first American edition, 1793, rebound with new endpapers. Title-page has been professionally repaired and mounted on acid-free paper, then reinserted. We were missing this volume and bought it as described. (See photos). Volume 3 is "An Account of the Bilious Remitting Fever, as it Appeared in the City of Philadelphia, in the Year 1793". It is a second American edition, 1894, Front joint is weak but attached. Title-page and Preface show old water-stains. Volume 4 contains further account of yellow fever and a defence of blood-letting as a remedy for certain diseases. London: Printed By John Richardson, for George Nicol, 1894. Rebacked with original leather spine laid-down. The spine was chipped but most is retained. Black leather spine label. Covers and edges marbled. Hinges re-inforced probably at time of rebacking. Book-plate of Logan Clendening on front pastedown. Clendening was a distinguished teacher at the University of Kansas and a major collector of medical books. Old bookseller's description of the book dated 1950 affixed to the rear pastedown.This volume was bound without the frontispiece portrait which is supplied in facsimile. All eight engraved plates are found at the end of the book. Plates VII and VIII show some foxing at periphery, others are quite clean. A ninth plate is found at p.161. It contains two figures and is clean. Wide margins, only occasional minor foxing. 575pp. A well-preserved copy of this classic work. Amsterdam, 1720. Title translated:" The Great Mirror of Folly, Showing the Rise, Progress, and Downfall of the Bubble in Stocks and Windy Speculation, Especially in France, England, and the Netherlands in the Year 1720. This copy is missing the title-page (provided in facsimile). It contains fifty-two of seventy-six plates. Exact number of plates is not certain, reported from 55 to 74, no two books are the same! All plates in our example are copper-plate engravings, well-struck with a good margin at plate extremities. They are individually bound, so that they may be opened fully within the book. Many are double-page. All are very clean nad nicely-struck. They are a satirical look at the blundered experiences of John Law, wild speculation in financing stock to exploit the Freench colonies in America! Edinburgh: W.H. Lizars, 1835. SIX VOLUMES UNIFORMLY BOUND. These are Volumes 1-6 of the Ichthyology series. They date from 1835-1843. Spines are lettered in gilt. Volumes 4 and 6 have 1 and II in ink on spine (The two volumes of the British Fishes). Volume 5 has been rebacked with the original spine laid-down. There are a total of 202 plates in the six volumes, including a frontispiece and vignette title-page in each volume. Title-page vignette in Volume 1 is hand-colored, others are not. Title continues; "Also, an appendix, comprising a dissertation on dysentery.... and observations on thre winter epidemic 1815-16, denominated peripneumonia notha..." Rebacked with original paper labels laid-down. Label chipped with three letters (MED) missing from title. Original blue paper-covered boards, printed front and rear covers. Hinges rather crudely repaired long ago. Top of covers water-stained as well as top edge. Fore-edge untrimmed. Cover printing is readable but faded a bit. (See photos). Many pages are browned at periphery, some foxing and staining. Owner's embossed stamp at foot of front free endpaper of Ira M. Rutkow, M.D. , noted bibliographer of military history. The author was an Army surgeon during the American Revolution and also served during the War of 1812. Palmes (1851-1930) was a member of an old English family who resided at Noburn Hall in York. He was a friend of James Conrad, retired from the Somerset Light Infantry in 1891 with rank of Major. These poems were written after the publication of "Seraphim" and with the exception of a few contributuons to English and American periodicals, are printed here for the first time.
