Amsterdam: Jaques [sic] Desbordes, 1734. Full contemporary calf rebacked with gilt tooled calf, leather spine label. Owner's name and "le President de Montesquieu" written in pen on title page, very lightly rubbed at cover extremities, small indentation scar on rear cover: a very nice VG+ copy. Small 8mo. Printing and the Mind of Man, p, 117: "... this was immediately recognized as a major work, and it has remained the most popular and widely read of his books." "... neither its style, a masterly succintness, nor its matter ... have lost their value.. 1st edition. 1st issue. Title page in red and black. Le Petit p. 493-4. This copy has neither the mispagination error on pp. 101-104 nor the errata page. It does have all errors on pages 129, 130, 131, & 267. None of these is a cancel sheet. cf Brunet.

NY: Visionaire Publishing, nd (1991). 24 loose sheets (some folded, some folded more than once) in a folded portfolio. Very light wear to covers else nice copy: VG+ to Near Fine. oblong 4to. Illustrated in color by Ruben Toledo and others. #238 of 1,000 copies printed. "Visionaire is a quarterly multi-format album of inspiration, a journal of fashion and art, a tribute to creativity." Contributions by Bill Cunningham, Mats Gustafson, Bruce Weber, Kenny Scharf, Serge Lutens, Juan Botas etc

London: W. Pearson, for J. Tonson, 1719-1720. Contemporary 3/4 calf and yellow cloth. Missing all 6 leather spine labels, otherwise a nice clean, attractive set: VG+. 12mo. Illustrated with musical notation throughout.

Londres [London], 1780-1781. 1/2 calf and marbled boards. 1/2 veau.. Spines all damaged with tops and bottoms of leather missing: needs rebacking. Covers otherwise lightly rubbed, contents clean tight: nice reading copy as is, or reback to collectible condition. 8vo. Frontispiece portrait by L.M. Vanloo. Volume 2 is dated 1780; the others are 1781. Neither the editor, nor the publisher are specified. TEXTS IN FRENCH; TEXTES EN FRANCAIS.

Neuchatel: Smauel Fauche, 1775. 3/4 brown leather and boards, all edges stained red (toutes tranches rouges). Spine leather dried on all volumes and labels have disappeared, some lack pieces of spine and some have pieces reglued; most volumes tight, but some have loose front hinges & volume 11 front cover (and 1st few pages) detached; texts clean: Good-. 8vo. Frontispiece in volumes 1-3, 5, 7 & 8. Additional plates in volume 5 (Marked 6-8) and 6 (marked 9-12) and 2 each in volumes 7 & 8. 13 Folding music plates at end of volume 11.. 11 volume set. Nouvelle edition; Revised edition.

Paris: Th. Desoer, 1817. Full grained dark maroon leather, all edges gilt, bottom cover edges gilt tooled. Owner's name stamp on title and one text page of each volume; moderate to heavy foxing, cover edges lightly rubbed, but some somewhat more heavily rubbed spots and dry spine edges, header of volume 13 chipped, else nice clean tight bright set: VG. 8vo. Frontispiece of Voltaire in Volume I. A photo of a portrait of Voltaire has been laid in, in lieu of a frontispiece?). in volume 16 discoloring the paper

London: R. Ackermann, 1827. Full gilt tooled morocco with gilt inner dentelles; marbled edges and endpapers. Cover edges rubbed and scuffed, lacks title page (unless the vignette title page is considered the title page), very occasional light foxing, a few pages dampstained at top edge, 3 pages loose and edge worn, else clean tight copy: VG. 8vo. Illustrated with 12 colored plates of architectural views, 12 of dresses and 6 of furnishings (in all, 30 color plates) + 6 black and white patterns. In addition, there's a vignette title page (frontis) & a steel engraving of PT Barnum. VOLUME V ONLY, from January to June, 1827

London: Macmillan, 1863. Publisher's gilt pictorial brown cloth, green coated endpapers. Volume one has been professionally rebacked with the original spine laid down; top of header of volume 2 chipped off, both volumes rubbed at extremities, VERY occasional foxing; volume 2 was internally split and reglued: overall a Very Good- set. 8vo. Frontis portrait of Blake from a miniature of Linnel in volume 1 plus many illustrations by Blake himself. 1st edition, with preface by Anne Gilchrist. Half title of Volume I inscribed "From the publisher." Bentley & Nurmi #1234A: 2,000 copies printed: this is "one with which every serious student of Blake should be familiar." London: Shakespeare Press (for the author), 1821. 3/4 brown pebbled leather with 5 raised bands and marbled boards & endpapers, T.E.G. Ex-library (Marlboro College and Boston Atheneum), some plates foxed (no tissue guards), occasional in-text foxing, but generally clear, hinges tape reinforced inside and out, bindings tight, light edge rubbing: VG. 8vo. 1st edition. Supplement bound after volume 3.

London: J. & P. Knapton, H. Lintot, J. & R. Tonson, and S. Draper, 1751. Full calf, 5 raised bands, spines & cover edges gilt tooled. Covers lightly rubbed with some splitting of joints; overall a nice clean tight set, some foxing and browning throughout: VG. 12mo. Illustrated with 24 copper plates by diverse artists including Sam Wale, N. Blakey, Ant. Walker, F. Hayman. 1st edition thus.

London: John Murray, 1852. Green cloth, pictorial gilt stamping on front cover & spine.. Hinges cracked, front endpaper & frontis tipped in, spine joint tears reglued, cover extremities lightly rubbed, pages 83-96 are torn and repaired with scotch tape, much of which is now browning: Good+. 8vo. Illustrated with wood engravings and 2 lithographs.

London: Printed for F. & C. Rivington; Otridge & Son; J. Nichols; J. Sewell etc., 1802. Full leather. Occasional foxing mostly opposite plates, pages 209-10 & 289-90 have 4" closed tears, covers rubbed, bindings sound/tight: VG+. 8vo. Frontispiece, vignette title page + 14 full page engravings. Includes: The Life of Dr. Young by Mr. Herbert Croft

Boston: Hougton Mifflin, nd (1902). 3/4 red leather and marbled boards. Spine gilt decorated. Top edges gilt. 4 volumes have light sun faded along cover edges at spine (ca 1/4" mostly) else nice clean tight bright copies: VG+/no djs (probably as issued). 8vo. Illustrated with black and white photogravures. Wallace McIlvaine Scudder's copy with his bookplate in each volume. Scudder was the founder of the Newark Evening News. Each volume has an inscription from "GWS" dated 1917, probably Scudder's 2nd wife Gertrude Witherspoon Scudder.

London: Charles Knight & Co., nd (ca 1838). Gilt decorated brown cloth. Internally, all of the volumes are clean and tight. Condition of the bindings varies. One spine is entirely missing. One cover is detached. The remaining volumes had small spine nicks and tears, many reguled. Overall, it's about VG. Large 8vo. Profusely illustrated with wood engravings. In the publisher's original pictorial cloth binding. Wikipedia says this edition was published in parts from 1838-41 and that his non-standard spelling of "Shakespere" set a trend.

London: Geo. B. Whittaker, 1827. Full gilt tooled morocco with gilt inner dentelles; marbled edges and endpapers. Cover edges rubbed and scuffed, lacks steel engraving facing page 1, very occasional light foxing, a few pages dampstained at top edge, else clean tight copy: VG. 8vo. Illustrated with 6 steel engravings (this copy lacking one) and 10 colored plates constituting what the title page calls 13 (counting each dress as an engraving). VOLUME V ONLY, from January to June, 1827

Spine sunned, header torn; covers lightly soiled; front hinge starting to crack; pen note in bottom margins of page 91, overall Good+ to Very Good- (no dj). 8vo. Illustrated with 4 black and white photos and 8 maps in red and black. 1st edition. Broadfoot 425; Coulter - Travels Confederate States #357; In Tall Cotton #136; Dornbush #436. Nevins I: 140: "The unchallenged champion of LA soldiers' narratives, packed with color, drama, personal incidents .. a Confederate classic.
