Atlanta, GA.: Byrd Printing Co., 1911. 1st Edition . Hardcover. Very Good. FIRST Edition in original gray cloth; gently bumped corner tips with spine crown frayed/worn. A VERY GOOD volume with weak hinges - but a tight text block. On verso of frontispiece is authors signature, we presume it is 'publisher printed' - though no other first editions mention it. A shadow of a penciled p.o. name on front end-paper - and scattered mild foxing throughout. A b/w frontispiece of author and title page are partially loose. Just a few bent page tips. Has first edition points - on page 81, line 1, with 'friends' later changed to 'French'; page 154 line 5, has "J".T. Sherman, later corrected to W. T. Sherman. Five b/w illustrations (plus frontispiece). At rear is Appendix with listings of names of Officers and Privates. 285 pages. Hard to find title. Protected in a mylar slip.

J. B. Lippincott Co., 1900. Hardcover. Near Very Good. Bound in tan cloth with red and black illustrated cover. Overall moderately soiled, spine a bit more so. Crown and foot of spine cloth has frayed. Corners are barely bumped. Front interior hinge is showing a tad of webbing, but still a very tight text block. Seventeen b/w illustrations on glossy stock. Clean interior pages, no markings at all. 336 pages. Protected in a mylar slip.

Boston: Ticknor and Fields, 1860. 1st Edition . Hardcover. Very Good. FIRST Edition, Second Printing, as the 16 pages of advertisements in Volume I are dated March 1860. LISTED in "The Checklist Of Fantastic Literature" by E.F. Bleiler. Preface is preceding contents, correctly. Two volume set - Very Good, being re-cased (tight text block) with original blind stamped cloth onto new boards. Still bright gilt spine titles. Original brown end-papers in place (no markings), with new blank end-papers just before it. Volume I (only) has a small previous owners name, dated 1860 on a blank white end-paper. Last blank page of Volume I has a penciled 'copy' of a letter/opinion written to Hawthorne by John Lothrop Motley, about this title. Motley was an American historian,1814 - 1877. Interesting. Otherwise volumes are clean, no markings. Preface is before "Contents. Volume 1 shows 'on' instead of 'for' on page 225, line 22 and lacks 'Conclusion' in Volume II. NYC: New Directions, 2001. 1st Edition . Hardcover. New/New. FIRST American Edition THUS, with a Introduction by Susan Sontag. A Clean, tight volume in same condition UNclipped dust jacket. No markings at all. This is the book that Susan Sontag 'found' in a 'book bin', thereby re-discovering the Russian author and title! Mylar protected jacket.

Elaborate gilt design to front of blue boards and spine (still bright); Volume I has two micro splits at crown cloth and Volume II has a 1/4" chip at crown. Does not detract. Top edges gilt (still bright/as new). The splendid Van Twiller Edition. Beveled edges with pictorial end-papers. Both volumes have previous owners name (in copperplate script) on front free end-papers. Inner paste down has one line of numbers near top edge. All neatly done. Tissue guards in place on both frontispieces. Clean - tight, no markings to interior pages at all. Every page is bordered in green and red with text within. A beautiful edition. Postage at cost, but so worth it. Heavy set, suggest Media postage.

FIRST Edition with same date on title page as copyright page. * INSCRIBED* by author on blank free end-paper and dated in year of publication (1878) in Augusta, Georgia. All five (all perfect) Illustrations are in place. Clean, NO interior markings at all. Very Good volume (no dust jacket) in original green blind stamped borders/mildly soiled cloth; Faded spine titles. Corners are gently bumped/worn with very light edge wear. Several pages uncut at top edge and a few pages rough-cut' at top (does not detract at all.) A printed tasteful period book plate on inside end-paper. A seven page Index at rear. 263 pages. Protected in a mylar slip. Insurance included.

London: John Murray, 1866. Hardcover. Very Good. British issue. Complete Ten volume set, in beautiful 3/4 blue leather with marbled boards and closed page edges, as well as end-papers. Gilt spine titles still bright. Each volume has a facsimile of the original title page (with engraving), dated 1851; followed by the 1866 title page. Each volume has an engraved frontispiece, with tissue guard in place. NO markings to interior pages. A few exterior hinges are showing 'cracks', but all are still quite tight. Corners are gently worn on all volume as are extremities (gentle shelf wear). Does not detract from this fabulous set. Volume III has two fold-out facsimile pages of Byron's handwritten verse. Volume IX includes six Cantos of Don Juan. No age-toning at all. Postage at cost, suggest Media postage. (Insurance included). Fabulous set.

Publishers tinted black top page edges, PERFECT. Eight (8) fabulous color tipped in plates, with many b/w thrilling illustrations (plus many smaller vignettes). Longmans, Green and Co., 1898. 1st Edition . Hardcover. Very Good. Publishing date on title page, FIRST EDITION. Vintage childrens illustrated story, with politically incorrect images. Illustrated book boards are rubbed/soiled with green cloth spine complete, but mottled. Extremities show shelf wear overall, with corners worn. Pictorial end-papers. Front interior hinge is tight but has it's paper pulled away somewhat at gutter. A (top to bottom) crease to front end-paper, with a very shallow crease to several following pages. All color pages are vibrant and awesome. Some margins show faint finger smudges or just light foxing (not impacting text or illustrations.) One page has a 1" closed tear (no paper loss) at lower margin. A wonderful copy of this Nineteenth Century adventure. Protected in a mylar slip. (Sidebar: Mother (Bertha) wrote the verse and daughter (Florence) illustrated.) Insurance included. A FIRST EDITION.

This title was included in "Bleiler's Checklist of Fantastic Literature''. Original green cloth is frayed at crown and foot with worn corners (lower front corner edge worn through.) A vintage large bookplate on inside cover (wonderful). Gilt titles. Front hinge is weak with exposed webbing, but still tight text block. Original brown end-papers. Two frontispieces with tissue guard between. Mild wavy pages throughout. One 2" closed tear at inner margins (no paper loss) to one page margin, not impacting text. At rear are four pages of publishers back listings. 536 pages. Hard to find title. No Jacket. Protected in a mylar slip. Priced to reflect blemishes.

Illustrated with (9) facsimile color plates and several (6) full size page b/w drawings. First issued in 1861 by a Richmond, VA. printer. A copy of the original is in the Rare Book and Special Collections Division of The Library of Congress. Laid in is the Library of Congress "Profile" booklet for this title. Approx. 14" tall x 10 1/2" wide; may need a bit of extra postage due to size. No jacket as issued. Fabulous reference for a historian.

Illustrated with 75 b/w photographs throughout by famed Margaret Bourke-White (with notes on the cameras and lenses used). Dust jacket has original price on front flap. Remains of tape to flap edges; Edge creased and chipped overall. Several closed tears. Top edge of jacket is lacking a 'chunk', impacting title. See photo. Still a wonderful jacket. 190 pages. Blank front free end-paper has two pencil names and dates, (1905 and 1925). Top edge gilt (still bright). Corners are gently bumped and crown and foot of spine cloth just starting to fray. Front and rear book boards have discolored areas (vintage soiling?). This title is written in 'dialect' verse, but he also wrote in both conventional English and Mid-Western regional dialect. Illustrated with 40 b/w photographs from the Hampton Institute Camera Club. LAID-IN is a six (6) page "HAMPTON" booklet, (5' x 4") issued by 'The Press of the Hampton Normal and Agricultural Institute', dated 1917. 144 pages.Fabulous item. Protected in a mylar slip.

Full black leather (with elaborate 22kt gold decorations) box holds a beautiful moire tri-fold - and within that is a sixteen page facsimile of Abraham Lincoln's handwritten manuscript/autobiography. It was issued before his election and sold over a million copies. The original is in the Library of Congress Rare Book and Special Collections Division. This facsimile is the first time it has been reproduced in its entirety. Laid in is the publishers booklet/history of the text. MINT condition. Over-sized. Truly Mint condition. Hard to find item.
