They come in a lovely clamshell box in red quarter leather. Each volume is bound in full red calf with the eye in the ring motif that appeared on the dustwrappers of the 1st editions on the front boards, with single line gilt frame. The spines have gilt compartments and raised bands, with gilt stamped black labels. All edges gilt.Attractive marbled endpapers to each, with inner dentelles around edges. Internally the books are EXCEPTIONALLY clean, with only the occasional fault. The creamy paper shows no blemishes except in a couple of places. This is a disbound copy of Schomburgk's classic work, with all 12 large colour plates present, as well as colour engraved "frontispiece" (as per writer's description) plus letterpress titlepage. Includes the map and list of subscribers. Original publisher's gilt cloth in quarter leather. The volume measures: 56.2cm x 37.8cm. This is a rarity, and is all present, the colours in the engravings depicting the natives' everyday life in Guiana and the extraordinary landscape are bright and the plates are clean. The letter press pages have a tidemark to the bottom outer corner. Paper guards to prevent offsetting present. LONDON: George Allen & Unwin, Ltd, 1960. 1st Edition 10th Impression. Hardcover. Very Good/Very Good. This is a lovely set of the highly sought-after fantasy classic in the first edition format, including the iconic "eye in the ring" motif. These are the 14th / 11th / 11th impressions, dating 1965 / 1965 / 1965. They are sharp cornered, have extremely bright clean gilt, do not have inscriptions and are good solid bindings. The maps are extremely clean and bright, again with no sign of handling. The classic grey dustwrappers are sharp and not price clipped, each showing a 25s price. All wrapper shave some yellowing and sunning / yellowing to spines, as per pictures, with The Return of the King having more yellowing across the front panel and with a delicate joint on the wrapper showing signs of starting to separate, but stabilised in a removable plastic sleeve. Where the books are so clean, I'd say there were very good if it weren't for the library markings.

A genuinely rare item. Includes also a handwritten contemporary note on loose paper, headed "Regimen" and with particular treatments written, with ingredients for Cures and Purgatives. Some loss to bottom of this leaf. A unique item.

Unusually, this volume is complete, from frontispiece through to the final list of subscribers. Based on Fox's classic Book of Martyrs, and augmented with later writers. Overall, a scarce volume in FAIR/GOOD condition.

THE AVENUE GOES TO WAR (in three volumes); by R F DELDERFIELD; C1950; PAPER WRAPS; VERY GOOD, HAND CORRECTED TYPESCRIPT This is the author R F Delderfield's pre-publication hand-corrected typescript of his novel The Avenue Goes To War (published in 1958). It comes from the estate of a close friend of Delderfield, and I have various other Delderfield items yet to be catalogued. The typescript comprises three hand-corrected volumes, bound in blue paper with red spine, on American Letter Size paper. Each volume has a typed title pasted to front cover: THE AVENUE GOES TO WAR by R F DELDERFIELD. Each volume also has a handwritten title: MASTER COPY, VOL.1, VOL. 2, and VOL. 3. This volume is very much a work in progress, the books have copious handwritten corrections in blue ink throughout in Delderfield's hand, with numerous crossings out and substitutions. The condition of the pages is good with very clean, slightly mellowed pages throughout, some light foxing and some chipped pages to volume II. This book includes The Apocrypha. Paul Rotha was twice Academy Award nominated, and BAFTA nominated. He was a British documentary filmmaker, film writer, producer, director, film historian and critic. Eric M. Knight wrote the popular series of "Lassie" books. Boards rubbed and marked, spine darkened, prelims lightly foxed, some light foxing to some pages otherwise clean throughout. Good.

Wrapper is price clipped, rubbed, lightly marked and has a darkened spine and extremities, boards lightly marked and lightly bowed. Dent to spine of book. Clean throughout. Good to Very Good. The book is a classic of the Civil Rights movement. African American writer Greenlee had been rejected by 38 US publishers for his fictional story about the first black CIA officer, who continually faces prejudice. A satire that sees the central character trained up by the CIA then quit the service to use his training to organise resistance to white supremacy. Greenlee met small-time UK publisher Allison in the UK. There was no budget for publicity, and the book's success was purely through word of mouth. It was finally signed in the US by Bantam, and was made into the 1973 movie. A snapshot of the time, the book is Greenlee's only novel. Historically important and genuinely scarce, or even rare.

A fascinating series of bound magazines of the Journal of the Royal Medical Service, from January 1934 to October 1945 - incorporating case studies from the War era, along with other reports and discoveries, including, for example, an article by Alexander Fleming on Penicillin in the 1945 volume. 12 volumes in total, with gilt black leather spines, 8 with black cloth in quarter calf (20 - 27), 4 brown cloth black quarter calf (28-31) Some occasional wear to leather edges, and bottom edge has light shelf wear, some pages mellowed, Minor damp marks to boards and prelims to vol 22 and 20, otherwise all clean throughout. Good to Very Good - and this set gives a fascinating insight into medical developments in the build-up to and throughout the war years. Interior Design Notes: The books measure 25cm X 19 cm and stretch for 28cm along the shelf. An extremely scarce set in a run like this.

A further German inscription dated 1998 to half title, with quote in German from St Luke. Books 1 and 2 in one volume, compete. The frontispiece showing Hitler's portrait is clean and bright and the pages are in similar bright condition throughout. Excellent. Copies of Mein Kampf are getting scarce. An excellent example. NEW YORK: GREENBERG. 1st Edition . Hardcover. Good/Good. A very unusual signed Association Copy. The author, Eric M Knight was the creator of the "Lassie" series of dog stories that were made famous by Hollywood in its series of hit movies. It's unusual to find copies of his books other than Lassie, and less so signed. Knight's dedication on the front endpaper is to to Paul Rotha, a British Oscar-nominated documentary film maker. The book is in Good Minus condition. The wrapper is rubbed and marked, with an open tear to head and heel of sunned spine. The boards are rubbed and lightly marked, and top edge lightly marked, prelims lightly foxed. There is also occasional foxing to some pages. Alongside the dedication to Paul Rotha is his library stamp showing ownership. The Hollywood / film associations here make this book a genuine rarity.

LONDON AND NORTH EASTERN RAILWAY COMPANY. Full Morocco. Very Good. Landscape Folio. Dating from the 1920s. This immense map shows a schematic with the layout of Immingham Dock, showing the railway lines and their placing in the dock. The map is extremely large scale - 25.344 inches to 1 mile - with really excellent detail. It is in NEAR FINE condition, clean and tidy. The sheets of thick paper are laid on cloth with gaps to enable the map to be folded to allow inspection of map sections. The maps is large: 210cm x 96cm back with cloth for strength. The binding is gilt stamped red morocco, rubbed to extremities, 1 board separated. Very scarce indeed.
