Uncut pages with wide margins. Some creasing to first and last few pages, light foxing to text, small stamp to title page dated 13 May 1846. A rare early Russian language edition of the New Testament. The 1838 Leipzig edition published by Karl Tauchnitz - this unauthorised edition was the first Russian language edition of the New Testament to be published outside Russia. The Russian Bible Society had previously issued Russian language editions between 1822 and 1826, but no other edition was published in Russia until the Synod authorised edition of 1860. This 1838 edition had a print run of 2000 copies, 500 of which were smuggled into Russia. A good solid example of a very rare item. Overall condition is Very Good Minus. Expertly rebacked in matching style, spine has a red morocco title label, gilt ruled compartments each with a gilt ornament. Some offsetting from turn-ins to endpapers, a few marks to text but generally in very clean condition throughout. Slip of paper signed by Maria Edgeworth tipped in to front endpaper. The rare first published work of the famed children's author and educationist. From the private library of the Beaufort family. Maria's father Richard Lovell Edgeworth married Frances Anne Beaufort in 1798, she was his fourth wife and a year younger than Maria. The two women became close friends and Maria was in frequent contact with many members of the Beaufort family. Unbound with only the first few pages held by cords, most gatherings are detached. Lacking leaves C4 and C5 (pp23-26) and the final leaf I8 (pp126). Also lacking the engraved plate after p102. Dog-eared to corners, light stains to a few pages. Contemporary ink markings to several pages to assist in the reading of the words. Good solid bindings. Volume one has light rippling to the pages and foxing up to page 3, hole to front free endpaper and three small holes to leading blank, Volume II is very clean throughout. Engraved bookplate to front endpapers (Charles Grave Hudson - 1st Baronet Hudson, of Wanlip Hall, Leicestershire.) The first edition of one of Voltaire's most important works, a landmark in the development of historiography, published under the alternative pseudonym M. de Francheville. A very nice example. Spines have five raised bands, red morocco title labels, compartments ornately decorated in gilt. Some marking and slight worming to boards. Spines rubbed with slight wear to head and foot. A couple of volumes have slight cracking to joints but all boards are firmly attached. Gilt decorated board edges and turn-ins. All page edges gilt, marbled endpapers. Very tight bindings in excellent overall condition. Clean pages throughout. French language.
