Volume IV in The Novels of Dostoevsky with only three other titles listed: The Brothers Karamazov, The Possessed and The Idiot and 'Printed in England' on copyright page. Letter A to first page and Ballantyne Printer's slug to last page. In grey cloth with gilt to type and top page ends which have a little pigment loss to gold. Spine is lightly tanned with very light wear at ends. Nice sharp corners, clean interior and tight binding. Early Printing

A lovely set of four volumes in two that likely published after the four volume first authorized American edition in olive cloth by the same publisher. In blue cloth and bright gilt. A little tanning to top and front page ends with a light stain/smudge to top page ends of first volume. A few tiny spots of wear to spine ends and corners, otherwise few marks. Some foxing to endpapers, otherwise clean interior, sharp corners and tight bindings.

The First US Printing of this translation direct into English with date of first printing on title page, 'Printed in England' on copyright page and only four titles listed. In grey cloth with gilt to top page ends that has dulled. Dinged corners frayed at bottom. Shallow strip to top of spine mostly gone and a few spots of fraying to bottom. Tanning and soiling/marks to spine. Interior surprisingly clean with mild tanning and solid binding.

Boston: Houghton Mifflin Company, 1958. Second Edition/6th Printing. Hardcover. Good/Poor. Tenth Impression overall of the US Edition as stated on the front jacket flap. In light green cloth with blue type and cap motif. Several faint splash stains to top and front page ends. One small spot to middle of spine. Rear bottom corner slighty soft, but corners sharp overall. Endpapers of Thror's map lovely in black and white. Full color frontispiece with 'Printed in Great Britain' to copyright page. Front hinge is starting to split at top third at verso of ffep and bottom 2/3 at page following with 1/4 inch transverse tear between, but binding still solid. A few small dark spots/stains to page following ffep and 2-3 after as well as tops of 3-4 pages, otherwise nice and clean. Scarce jacket is clipped at bottom of front flap with chipping at corners, 3/4 inch split to bottom of front flap crease and 1 3/4 inch split to bottom of rear flap crease. New York: Random House, 1949. First US Edition/First Printing. Hardcover. Fair/Good. The early dystopian classic available in the original edition. Stated First Printing. Scarce with author's signature to half-title page. In light blue debossed cloth boards with darker blue cloth spine and silver type. top page ends tinted light blue. Unfortunately, to combat pigment/paper loss common to boards of this edition, a previous owner painted boards blue(but not spine). Some light loss still visible to board ends and corners. Light wear overall with sharp corners. A tiny blue spot to bottom page ends and some very faint smudges to endpapers and paper abrasions to pastedowns. Otherwise clean with tight binding. Would be Very Good if not for aforementioned coloration of boards. Jacket price is price-clipped with some very small chips primarily to top corners, head of spine and top of panels. Crease to front flap with smaler edge crease, some scuffing and spotting to top of rear flap.

New York: Harrison Smith and Robert Haas, 1934. First US Edition/First Printing. Hardcover. Very Good/Poor . The magnificent first novel in the Claudius duology. In blue cloth with blind stamp to front cover and gilt to type on spine which has largely worn off to title and author. Light foxing to front and bottom page ends, otherwise clean with sharp corners and solid binding. Jacket is unclipped ($3.00) and brittle with a fair amount of foxing to flaps, long split down rear half of spine from top and across which has small tape repair. Chipping and short tears to corners, spine ends and tops of panels. Puncture to front panel, very faded spine and scuffing overall.

New York: Charles Scribner's Sons, 1920. First US Edition/1st Printing. Hardcover. Good/N/A. Stated 'Published September, 1920' with colophon to on copyright page as per first issue. In dark green cloth with blind stamp titling to front cover and gilt to spine which has dulled a bit. Rubbing through cloth and softening at bottom corners, with softening to top corners as well. A few nicks to heel of spine and a 1/4 inch tear at head. Some spots/marks and smudges to cloth, but not excessive. Some light tanning to pages and page ends. Deckle edge with some tears to front edge of last page and page following as still uncut and a sloppy attempt was made from the top a third of the way down. Letter and number 'C10' to ffep, otherwise clean interior and solid binding. In brand new high quality facsimile jacket.

Berkeley: Parnassus Press, 1968. First US Edition/First Printing. Hardcover. Poor/Fair. Scarce First Edition/First State with faint vertical smudge on the title page. An ex-library copy with significant wear. In aqua/blue cloth with debossed black illustration on front board and black to type on spine which is slightly cocked. Rubbing through cloth with some fraying at top and bottom board and spine ends. Tape shadows/residue to tops and bottoms of same. Stains around top of spine and to top of front board. Corners a little soft. Several sticker paper/scars with some rippling to ffep(and page following) where library stickers and pocket were. Library numbers to top of same, 3 tiny pen marks to title page and number to copyright page as well. Small 1/2 inch split to top of front hinge and some numbers to ffep and copyright page. In blue cloth with white type to spine. A copy that is well loved and has had some repairs to binding over the years including glue to split at top outside of front spine crease and very bottom of rear spine crease. Fraying to bottom of spine with spots worn through cloth at corners, bottom of boards and one spot to top of front board at spine. Front hinge separated at some point exposing mull and endured some amateur repairs with tape and then glue and is now holding well. 2 inch split still visible to top of front hinge at endpapers and tape shadows/adhesive residue to two pages following including title/copyright page front and back. Front edges of same pages have been trimmed. Last two pages and epilogue also show previous taping with residue and shadows, and trimming to front edges and have been reglued. Spine is slightly cocked and page ends tanned. Jacket is unclipped with notes in pencil to inside of spine and adjacent portions of panels. Tokyo: Ogawa Seibundo, 1918. First Edition Thus. Hardcover. Very Good/N/A. First Edition in English. Stated 1918 to title page with 1919 on cover which is standard to this edition. All further printings show year published. No endpapers issued for this copy, so possibly different state or early printing from same year of publication. In red cloth blind stamped to covers and with gilt to type and design motif on spine. Tanning to text block from paper used. Small pale stain to rear board and a few stay marks with 'Made in Japan' sticker to rear pastedown which has a little lifting to same corner and top of hinge. Quite nice overall given the age.

A scarce edition limited and numbered to 1000 copies of which this is #713 collecting stories, essays and poems and the first ever map from the world of The Book of the New Sun. In black cloth with red type to spine. Bump to bottom front corner with lesser ding to bottom rear. Interior clean and binding solid. Jacket has nick to head of spine and very short tear and scuff to bottom front corner.

In tan buckram cloth boards with iconic wraparound illustration in brown. Some dark spots to front board and a few marks/spots to rear board as well. Top page ends tinted brown which has faded. Gift inscription in pencil to ffep, previous owner's name and address to title page, note in pencil to rfep and price in pencil to rear pastedown which also has a few lines of notes in ink at top. New York: Alfred A. Knopf, 1957. First US Edition/6th Printing. Hardcover. Near Fine/Good. A very nice early copy in ochre cloth with brown titling and brown tinted top page ends. Nice and clean with sharp corners and tight binding. Only slightest cock to spine, a little wear/fading at heel and crease to one page corner. MCA Artists bookplate to bottom of ffep Unclipped jacket ($3.00) has chips at front corners and a couple to same flap crease. Paper clip mark to top of front panel and tiny staple holes to top of front flap. A little wear to spine ends, a few light scuffs, crease to top front corner edge and tiny abrasion to jacket spine. In extremely scarce wrap around belly bound celebrating the author receiving the Nobel Prize which has creases to inside flaps and tanning at spine with nick/tiny chip at top.

London: David Bogue, 1844. Fourth Edition. Hardcover. Good/N/A. Fourth Edition stated. Rebound in new boards and sturdy black cloth with gilt to type on spine. Previously in library circulation with minimal marks - only stamps to title pages and pastedowns with numbers in pencil and small stickers to rear pastedowns of both volumes. A couple very small pieces of tape to title pages. Some moisture staining to bottom edge of frontispiece for volume 1. No frontispiece to volume 2. No pockets or due slips. Intermittant foxing throughout, though not excessive. Folding map following Table of Contents to volume 1 chipped to front edge with larger chip at bottom edge and a number of short tears/nicks. Also, splits to top and bottom of one crease, but still holding. Illustrated throughout in black and white.

London: Ward, Lock & Bowden, Ltd., 1893. Third Edition/5th Printing. Hardcover. Poor/N/A. The first printing to include the note on Sherlock Holmes by Dr. Joseph Bell who inspired the character. In one quarter cloth binding with scarlet cloth to spine and overlap with gilt to titling and beige cloth covered boards with red type. Corners are bumped and rubbed through exposing boards at same. Gilt to top page ends. Soiling to boards with spots and rings. Front spine crease has a 1 1/4 inch split at top that has possibly been reglued and a 1 inch split towards bottom. The rear spine crease has a 4 inch split from bottom up. Fraying/cloth loss to spine ends with tanning to spine and some spotting and stains, especially at bottom of spine onto front board. Illustrated endpapers which are split at front with ffep separated two-thirds up from bottom. Some flaking with mull exposed, but some likely adhesive reinforcement as holding strong. A reinforced ex-library copy that was rebound for the library market with stamps to top page ends, front pastedown and title page. Due slip to front pastedown as well with pocket to ffep. Numbers to title page and rfep with sticker and bindery stamp to rear pastedown. Some tape shadows/residue to tops and bottoms of boards and endpapers. A few spots stains to page ends. Interior fairly clean and binding solid. Jacket is present, but price-clipped and laminated with some edgewear/rubbing, tape residue and call sticker to bottom of spine. Bottom of front flap clipped as well which appears to be quite common.

In tan cloth with orange title to front board, and blue type to spine with orange star. Top page ends tinted red. A nice copy for the age with minimal wear/rubbing and nice corners. Tanning to endpapers and some ripple to top half of ffep where there appears to be a very faint moisture stain mirrored on pastedown. Previous owner's name to top of same. Deckle edge to front and bottom page ends with some ragged short tears and chips to bottom edges of 15-20 pages which were attached from printer and obviously opened when read. Some very pale spots of foxing to pastedowns and first and last few pages and several spots/stains throughtout text. Separation at pages 374/375 with mull showing, but still feels solid. In high quality facsimile jacket.

Pages tanned with lovely design motif to endpapers. Light foxing to same and first couple pages. Edge tears to Table of Contents and dedication pages where pages were attached. Clean with solid binding. Charming period publisher promotional postcard and advertisent pamphlet. Deckle edge. Scarce in Jacket which is unclipped(7s. 6d. net) with small chips at spine ends, corners and one to top of rear panel which also has 1/2 inch jagged tear with creasing. Some spotting and tanning(mostly at spine).
