Coloniae Agrippinae, 1584. First edition. Uncolored, 739 mm x 500 mm, two sheets joined, with original folds professionally flattened. Oriented with East at the top. A number of small tears and fold separations have been archivally repaired on verso. In good condition. The map was issued with the booklet Urbis Hierosolyma Depicta which provided further information about sites keyed to the numbers on the map; some later editions of the map retained the 1584 date but were issued in the atlas Theatrum Terrae Sanctae (published posthumously, 1590 and later). The folded sections of this map are 16 cm x 9 cm, the size of the Depicta. Later editions have larger sections and fewer folds since the Theatrum was a larger book. There are a great many maps of Jerusalem, but this is one of the most influential. Among the 250 numbered and described locations Adrichom identifies 14 stations of the cross, which are still accepted today. New York: J.H. Colton, 1864. Brown pebbled cloth cover stamped in blind and gilt is in pristine condition. 82 x 110 cm unfolded; 10 x 16 cm folded. Full original hand coloring on onion-skin paper. Very Good. Professionally repaired tear around section attaching to the board, and extending beneath the cartouche (hardly noticeable from the front), minor spotting beneath the cartouche. Note that this is not backed with linen as some folding maps are; the paper is nearly onion skin and while not brittle is fragile. We do not recommend that it be flattened for framing. A highly important folding pocket map to be used in the field during the Civil War, in extraordinary condition. LC Civil War Maps 48.2. OCLC lists only five locations for the 1864 edition: LC, Yale, Penn State, Library of Virginia and Wake Forest. Americana Exchange records only one auction record in the last 15 years, and only two before that.

Vol 1: *4, A-Ttt6, Vvv4 [*1= half-title recto, frontis verso; Vvv4 blank] + 9 double-page maps. Vol. 2: ¶2, A-Bbb6 [Bbb6 blank] + 5 double-page maps. Pagination: v.1 [20], 786; v. 2 [2], 787-1338, [22]--Index. Good. Maps are clean. Vellum binding darkened; spotting and occasional browning in vol. 1, with spotting and extensive browning in vol. 2. Dampstain to lower left corner first 4 leaves vol. 1 and rear cover vol. 2. Front hinges open on both volumes with cords holding, rear hinges cracked but less so. Crown of vol. 2 pulled. The books are otherwise structurally sound. Bookplates of T.J. Phillips-Jodrell, no other signs of ownership. Clüver may be considered the father of historical geography in modern times. Privately Printed [Cuala Press], 1914. 50 copies only". Gray wraps printed in black. Very Good. Wraps browned at edges; very lightly chipped; separated at the spine but still bound by the purple ribbon. Text is clean, unopened, with no signs of previous ownership. Rare; perhaps the most elusive Yeats and Cuala titles due to the severe limitation and the fragility of the binding. Miller notes that it was "not for sale." (p. 127). This is a new version of the play in prose and verse--Wade, 108.

Large 4to: 52 leaves of text (unnumbered and unsigned); engraved title + 63 plates. Aside from the one plate and the blindstamp, in fine condition. All plates present, with a few out of order; plate 58 has a professionally repaired tear of 2" within the image. Tissue guards no longer present. Blindstamp on title page mostly burnished away, of the Lenox Library in Massachusetts. De-accessioning has been confirmed with the Librarian. No other markings. Graesse vol. 3 p. 198. [Paris], 1787. 15.5"x12" on blue tinted paper, original color highlighting positions. Left edge trimmed to the neat line. Fine condition. This map offers very fine detail: French and American units are labelled; the headquarters of Washington and Rochambeau are shown lower left. Note the allies' system of trenches just south of town. Wooldridge says this is the only map of the battle showing the parallel trenches built by the French which enabled their artillery to draw closer to the enemy. The manuscript of this map was prepared in 1781 and later printed in Soulés' "Histoire des troubles de l'Amerique Anglaise" (Paris, 1787). Title page is dated 1823, though some of the plates are dated 1825 (as usual). Text fresh and bright, very occasional light foxing to plates. The binding is in stunning condition, probably the best you will ever see on a book that was usually used in the field by workmen. Full tree calf, gilt fillets, marbled edges; more recent endpapers. Spine in six compartments with blind-stamping and a red leather label. A truly exceptional copy. This is the first edition of a very influential treatise that went into many editions. Haymond / With the best respects of / His very true friend / Wills De Hass / Sept. 14, 1851." Thomas Sherwood Haymond (1794-1869) was a Congressman representing Virginia, and a lawyer.
