New York: Random House [1985], 1985. First edition. Hardcover. Near Fine/Near Fine. 8vo. [11], 3-337, [2] pp. Quarter red cloth over red paper boards, gold lettering and two red rules on the spine. Illustrated title page. Price of $17.95 on the front flap of the dust jacket. McCarthy's classic, gruesome tale of American westward expansion in the middle of the nineteenth century. Litrerary critic Harold Bloom regarded Cormac McCarthy as one of the greatest American novelists of his generation. This novel made Time Magazine's top 100 list of the greatest English-language novels published between 1925 and 2005. A lovely example. Faint foxing to the textblock, mild, sporadic foxing in the pageblock; a tiny repair (3/4 c.m. wide) to the jacket's spine panel.

[Paris]: La Société Littéraire-Typographique, 1789. First edition. Hardcover. Very Good. 70 vol. 8vo. Please inquire if you require any pagination information. Contemporary full calf, spines in six and a half compartments, each with a red and a green morocco label lettered in gilt; several edges decoratively stained yellow. With 104 of the 122 recorded plates (Cohen-DeRicci calls for 122 plates), volume one is missing the tableau (the folding plate) and the dedication plate. Due to the vagaries of hand-press-era binding and to the large size of the set, it is difficult to determine which of the other 16 plates are the ones missing. The plates present depict Voltaire, scenes from his plays, and several fascinating figures from European History (including of course, Enlightenment-era figures). All other half-titles present (see condition statement). Bengesco 2142. Brunet 681. Cohen-DeRicci 1042-1047. This edition is the set most lauded for its completeness and beautiful typography. [3], iv, [1], 2-336, [1], 2-24 (pages of publisher's advertisements) pp. Brown publisher's cloth with decorations in blind and gold lettering on the spine. Coated yellow endpapers and pastedowns. Housed in a custom slipcase with marbled inner papers. Sadleir 16-17. Trollope Society, "The Warden". The publisher's catalog is dated September of 1854. Extraordinarily difficult to find in exceptional condition. The first of the Barset novels to be published, Trollope's Warden deals with zealous reformers pitted against the traditions of the Anglican Clergy. London: Tinsley Brothers, 1864. First edition. Hardcover. Very Good. 8vo. 2 vol. [7], viii-xvii, [2], 2--6, [1], 8-386, [2]; [4], vi, [1], 2-412, [2] pp. Half contemporary calf over marbled boards, spine in six compartments with a black morocco label lettered in gilt on each spine. Each volume illustrated with a frontispiece. Casada 47; Penzer 72. Burton here recounts his visit to Dahome, ruled at the time by King Gelele. The king was known for his enjoyment of human sacrifices, the execution of his subjects, and the use of enslaved people to maintain and grow Dahomey's crops. Burton was thoroughly reviled by his experiences in Dahomey, but considered his travels in Dahomey a valuable source of information regarding the status of slavery in the western hemisphere. A fascinating record of diplomacy and of Victorian travel. A Very Good set with moderate foxing to the flyleaves and two small marks of ownership on the front pastedown and flyleaf of each volume. A pencil annotation on p. 367 of volume… Leer más

Venetiis; Romae: Haeredem Hieronymi Scoti; Iulium Accoltum, 1586. Later editions. Hardcover. Very Good. 2 vol. Folio. [12], 1-149 (foliated leaves); [12], 1-269 (foliated leaves) pp. Later full vellum with manuscript hand on the spines; all edges decoratively stained blue. Later endpapers, though volume two retains an original rear endpaper. This is a married set, with volume two likely from a larger set of the complete works of St. Thomas Aquinas. Text in Latin. A few publisher's devices and engraved initials illustrate this set. Adams 1454. Aertsen, "Aquinas' Philosophy in its Historical Setting", Cambridge Companion to Aquinas 16. Encyclopedia Britannica, "Peter Lombard: French bishop". Graesse 139. Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy, "Thomas Aquinas". We could not locate the 1570 volume in Adams or Graesse. It is highly difficult to find all four books of this early work of St. Thomas Aquinas. Composed from 1252 until 1256, these commentaries are dense and systematic. They were written while… Leer más
