London: Grant and Griffith and Joseph Cundall, 1850. Very scarce first edition of Joseph Cundall's retelling of 21 classic children's tales inc Simple Simon, Little Bo-Peep, Tom the Piper's son and the Three Bears, in which Cundall made the female lead a young girl rather than an old women, although it was half a century later she was first called Goldilocks. Norwich-born Cundall, who published the book in association with Grant and Griffith, was a children's book publisher and prominent Victorian photographer. Half-leather covers on brown buckram boards with four raised bands, gilt title and rules, brown endpapers, unpaginated. More than 100 hand-coloured illustrations, inc milk-maid frontis. Brown endpapers. Charming note of provenance (dated 1934) lightly attached to ffep verso. Boards have wear and rubbing all round, with a few light marks. Joints and hinges are splitting, but holding. London: John Murray, 1854. Travels in Kurdish territories by one of the great Victorian diplomats. Full leather with gilt edging, cover edge decoration and raised spine bands and devices. Title in gold on maroon spine patch with gilt decoration. Marbled endpapers, pastedowns and page edges. Map and eight woodcuts. Minor scuffing to extremities but a very solid copy in generally very good condition. A beautiful book. Ref:06859. First Edition. Full-Leather. VG/N/a. 12.5x18.5cm.

London: Thomas Kelly, 1862. Corrected and enlarged edition, Volume one only, but has all 56 hand-coloured plates inc. tiger's head vignette on half-title and the often missing "White Negroes". This copy ihas ben professionally rebound in green calf with brown spine. Matching green spine panels with gilt. Marbled endpapers. Lower third of frontis portrait of the Count of Buffon is missing. Text stops mid-sentence at pp680, so there are possibly two pages missing at the rear. But plates are present and mostly in good condition. Foxing throughout. London: David Bogue, 1845. Second part only of two-volumes considered the best account of the Santa Fe expedition. Green tooled covers with gilt lettering to spine. London: Virtue & Co. Detailed and comprehensive complete five-volume work on the motor car in the day when "few persons...can do without some form of mechanical transport". First edition, ND, but late 1920s with publisher's correction slip attached to page 354 mentioning the 1929 Austin Seven. Five volumes in fairly uniform condition with previous owner's neat ex-libris stickers on front pastedowns. Maroon buckram with gilt and numerous b/w illustrations. Vols II, III, IV and V have coloured fold-out, cutaway diagrams at rear, 1866pp in total, inc index in Vol V. Vols have just light shelfwear and bumping to extrems, but are internally very clean and tight. Fold-out, cutaway of six-cylider Mercedes in Vol V has light damage but is complete. No DJs. New Delhi, India: IndiaInk, 1997. Genuine first edition (First Printing) of Arundhati Roy's Booker winner, published in India. Black covers with gilt, 340pp, with mauve endpapers. Covers have light wear and bumping to extrems, particularly head and foot of spine. A couple of light marks on dusty, slightly yellowed page edges, neat gift inscription on half-title, otherweise internally clean and tight. Unclipped (Rs 395) DJ similarly has general wear to extrems with a couple of closed (repaired) tears at head of spine. Ref:104606. First Edition. Cloth. VG-/G. 14x22cm.

London: Duckworth and Co., 1916. Wonderful First World War-themed cartoons by the incomparable Heath Robinson. The full-page cartoons appeared originally in various magazines, but published in book form first in 1916. Red spine has been professionaly and sypathetically replaced. Illustrated boards, 56pp with a cartoon on every page, inc frontis, title page and illustrated endpapers. Covers have general wear to edges and are a bit grubby, as are dusty page edges. Edges of endpapers are also grubby and foxed, but there is only very light foxing to rest of text bloc, which is generally clean and tight. Ref:114983. First Edition. Card Covers. VG-/N/a. Paris: Houdaille Beautifully illustrated Fables of Florian, text in French. Quarter leather with marbled boards, four raised bands with gilt titling and spine decoration, 288pp inc index. ND, but looks 1860s. Silk bookmark, marbled endpapers. Covers have very modest wear at extrems. Some foxing throughout, dusty page edges, neat sticker/coat-of-arms on front pastedown. Paris: Chez Houdaille et Veniger, 1829. Description of the discovery of the Roman ruins in 1822. Scarce first edition, French text. Half leather with gilt, marbled boards, 324pp, plus erratum (1pp) and contents (2pp). Five fold-out maps and diagrams - three at front and two at rear - all in VG condition. Extrems worn and bumped, small splits at head of spine and 2cm missing at foot of spine. Some foxing throughout, otherwise internally clean and tight and overall an attractive little copy. London: John Van Voorst Revised and enlarged fourth edition published between 1871-74. Vols 1 and II revised by Alfred Newton, Vols III and IV by Howard Saunders. Complete four-volume set with 564 wood engravings. Navy-blue covers with gilt, blind-stamped rules to upper and lower boards, rough-cut edges, black endpapers. Vol 1: 646pp; Vol II; 494pp; Vol III: 684pp; Vol IV: 531pp inc index. Vol I has a comprehensive list of British birds (29x45cm) slipped in and a gift inscription on ffep. Vol III has an article from an 1891 edition of "The Naturalis" slipped in. All four volumes are in similar condition with lightly sunned spines, dusty page edges, mild foxing to prelims and very occasional pencilled marginalia. London: Kelly and Co., 1869. Fifth edition of Kelly's directory of "The Post Office Directory of the Counties of Cambridge, Norfolk and Suffolk" .Rest of the book refers to "Cambridgeshire". Deep-red covers with gilt emblem on front board and gilt lettering on spine, 1122pp inc adverts and fold-out maps. Covers have general wear to extrems, hinges and joints broken, but repaired. Several early pages have small losses and repairs. Cambridge map has been repaired, Norfolk map has western section missing at fold and Suffolk map is missing. Several small sections of text bloc are attached but loose. Top third of spine (inc part of title) is missing, covered by repair. All pages seem to be present. Blue covers with gilt, gilt emblem on upper cover and white rules to upper cover and spine, 336pp inc index, plus 16pp of adverts. Gilt top edges and 25 full-page b/w illustrations (inc frontis) and fold-out family tree. Covers have almost no wear, light bumping to head and foot of spine. Foxed page edges and tanning to ffep and rfep, previous owner's label on front pastedown, otherwise internally very clean and tight. No Dj, but a very good copy. Ref:114777. First Edition. Cloth. Dublin: James M'Glashan, 1849. All the current tips in the Victorian kitchen from when food was in season, to how to carve and how to make cheese. Light-brown covers with gilt lettering and decoration to spine and blind-stampd decoration to front board, 328pp with several woodcuts, inc frontis of maid in kitchen. Covers have general wear, 0.5cm missing at head and foot of spine, which is faded. Both hinges very weak - but holding. Ffep is missing, pp23/4 loose, very small hole in edge of frontis verso, several marks on covers, particularly rear. Neat previous owner's name on frontis verso and bookseller's sticker on front pastedown. Overall a delicate, but intact copy of a fascinating mid-Victorian social document. Ref:093621. First Edition. Ipswich: W. E. Harrison, 1923. Rare copy published on behalf of the author for private circulation. Beige paper-covered boards with black lettering on upper front board, 39pp with b/w illustrations. Covers are a little scuffed at edges, page edges dusty. Front hinge is cracking and binding is weakening in a couple of places (spine area may have had some damp problems, which have just left a few tell-tale marks). Cambridge: Bowes and Bowes, 1918. Second impression after the first edition, privately printed in 1917. Blue covers with gilt to upper board "Cinquante-Quatre" at top and "France 1918" lower, 31pp with seven collotype illustrations tipped in (all present). Boards are rubbed at extrems, particularly head and foot of spine. Lightly grubby marks on prelims, otherwise text block is clean, although stitching is now loose, but holding. Previous owner's ex-libris sticker on front pastedown and name on ffep. Fascinating WWI Flying Corps memorabilia. Ref:103875. Second Impression. Cloth. G/N/a. 13x19cm.

Self Published, 1992. Academic dissertation on 20th Century Air Force co-operation between America and Britain. Included are letters pointing out that the author - a US Air Force Colonel - was considering an appeal against Cambridge University's decision to award him a D Litt rather than a Ph.D. There is also a list of influential people - including MPs - he hoped would support his appeal. He doesn't seem to have succeeded as he was awarded a D.Litt in 2003. Book has been professionally bound with royal-blue covers and gilt lettering to spine. 343pp plus loose notes and biography. Minor bumping to extremities and a few very small marks on rear cover, but overall a very good copy of a very scarce work. Heavy book (2.2kg) will require extrra postage. Ref:071172. London: Kelly's Directories, 1933. The 20th version of Kelly's directory of Norfolk. Revised, colour map of the county at title page. Red covers with blind-stamped rules and gilt and black lettering and adverts on spine and front board, 901pp. "Deacons", "Bussey and Sabberton" and "Irelands" adverts on front, "Norwich Union" on rear board and "James Walker" in gilt panel on spine. Covers have several modest marks, bumping to head and foot of spine, some wear to extremities, hinges are starting to weaken and page edges are dusty and a little grubby. Last page has small corner detached and held by clear tape and map is all there, but a bit creased and with 12cm closed tear. But overall a very reasonable copy. No DJ as issued. Vol II, 462pp inc index, plus adverts. Both volumes in similar condition. Covers very sound with minor bumping to head and foot of spine, light foxing to endopapers and dusty, yellowing page edges. Some highlighting (fading), underlining and some marginalia in first half of each volume. Neat name and note on each ffep, otherwise internally very tight. Both DJs unclipped with modest edgewear, particularly head and foot of spine, and a few small nicks and closed tears. Overall a very decent set. Heavy set might require extra postage. Ref:114967. Five raised bands with gilt lettering and decoraton on spine. ND but late 1890s. Very modest rubbing to extremities and slightly faded spine. London: A Strahan, and T Cadell and E Balfour, 1796. Volume three only of the three-volume seventh edition in full leather with gold bands and decoration to spine. Gilt title has faded. Ffep is almost detached and carries neat previous owner's inscription dated 1800. Fold-out chart of Aztec/Mayan sumbols intact but with a some creasing and two closed (5cm) tearsat rear.
