This copy, meticulously rebound in a copy of the original boards (also included as verification of the book's original state), with finish matching the original and with red and black morocco spinal labels. Water stain to the lower inside corner along bottom edge, of the first 75 pages, about 3 inches by 1 inch at front, diminishing as pages advance. tanned page edges, no chips and not brittle. Foxing to first & last 10-15 pps, rest clean & bright with even age yellowing to outer edges. Overall better than VG given following: Letter laid in on first endpaper w/ sealing wax from Abiel Abbott Livermore (b. 1811 Wilton NH), a Universalist Minister from Keene NH to his uncle E. Abbott dated March 8, 1844 regarding the book as a gift. Inscription on second front endpaper by uncle stating gift from nephew, name, etc... RARE, very limited presenceon World Cat in this original format. A 53 page booklet (not counting first free endpaper and title page), numbered from 59 through 111 (112 being the reverse unnumbered page and index). Sequential pagination continues from Book No. 1 and through to books 3 & 4. Yellow wraps bound at the spine. Corner from title page lower right missing, moderate edge and corner wear overall. All pages present and free from marks save ffep with pencil ownership name. This copy has been professionall rebound with acid free materials - stab sewn and a black cloth band wrapped around the spine end of the booklet reproducing the original binding. .

Octavo in unfaded original green pebble-grained cloth, gilt titles to spine, brown coated endpapers, boards blind embossed with eight-point corner pieces with wreath central both front and rear. Boards lightly rubbed at extremities, spine especially showing wear at head and foot, threads showing there and corners. A terrific copy, the cloth is clean and vibrant, and the whole is tightly bound. Adhesive remnants on bottom edge of front pastedown from address label carefully removed, and on second free end paper where a newspaper (20th century) photo of Thoreau has been also carefully removed leaving a ghost, some adhesive and ink from reverse of clipping. Another of 1650 copies published in May, 1864 with the list of Thoreau's books priced and no edition statement on the copyright page, 20+ pages of advertisements bound in at the rear dated April 1864. C.H. Webb. Very Good+ with no dust jacket. 1869. Third Edition. Hardcover. Russet cloth covered boards with gilt frog and titles on front, gilt spinal titles and embossed frog on rear board. The whole shows some modest soiling and edge wear. Bevelled boards with threads showing at extremities. Bookplate adhered to brown ffep and contemporary (to publication) ownership name on second blank page. The whole is tighty bound, and clean throughout save mentioned points. Overall a very nice copy of a rare early printing of Twain's first published book. .

A much later 38th Printing ("Y"), Inscribed to Newborn Molly and signed by Margret Rey on the reverse of the pictorial ffep. Jacket price clipped. Jacket also shows some scuffing and edge/corner wear, ad has a hole along the front flap fold. Protected in an acid free mylar protective cover. ; Signed by Author .

Sully and Kleinteich. Very Good+ with No dust jacket as issued. 1883. 1st Thus. Hardcover. A complete, matching, twelve (12) volume set in green coth covered boards with gilt spinal titles. Copyright dates of the individual volumes range from 1883 to 1906. Spines of all 12 volumes are darkened. As a set all volumes are clean and unmarked. At least a third possess uncut quartos. Page tops are gilt, remaining page edges are darkening. Most wear is noticeable at the head and tale of the spine where the cloth is ragged. Several volumes have discoloration or staining to covers (white paint splatters) but on the whole this is very minimal. This University edition is very uncommon and is complete in 12 volumes as presented. It includes works by Emerson that were previously unpublished. .

Philadelphia: Carey and Hart. Very Good+ with No dust jacket as issued. 1844. Reprint. Hardcover. Complete 4 (Four) Volume Set in full calf with black and red spinal gilt titled labels. Volume 1 (One) has a sunned black upper spinal label appearing light green now with gilt. Modest edge and corner wear for the sizeable volumes these are. Boards are fully attached, and blocks are solidly bound and unmarked. This is a beautiful full calf set. PON on small paper pasted down on reverse of free front marbled endpaper. Calf rejuvenated by seller/binder to preserve hinges and condition of leather. Typical of volumes of this age, there are some stains and pulls to the finish of the leather boards, less noticeable because of the beeswax, lanolin and neatsfoot oil treatment. .

VERY RARE in any condition, this is better than graded in glossy pictorial boards. Previous Owner's Name mostly erased from front free endpaper. No other writing or marks save a small yellow staine to page edges on last 60 or so pages unaffecting text block. .

These volumes show only very light shelf wear and gentle rubbing to board finish on bottom edges that met bookshelves. Othewise, they are all solid, clean and otherwise a near fine set, far better than the conservative grading. All pasted-down square color chips in rear of each book make this reference a must have! Set is 14 volumes, complete, according to the set's volume listing at the beginning of volume 1. Some sellers sets state 15 volumes, and this may be a later printing. Each volume 1/4 cloth bound, being covered in navy blue pper with gold Triton centered, and white linen clothspines with attached paper labels. All labels are tanning. Volume one is SSIGNED G. SANTAYANA and this set is numbered 663 of 940, 920 of which were sold by subscription and another 20 for presentation only. Each volume is clean, tight and appears gently read or unread as majority of the volumes are UNCUT. Very light shelf wear to the slip cases, most notable at the bottoms. Vlume 8 has a slight stain to spine. Otherwise, this is immaculate, and would be a terrific addition to the serious philosopher's library. .
