Two colored bronze steelhead framed with cedar. This is a spectacular and beautiful work, probably done 20-25 years ago by master craftsman, the late Dave Chesney; Mr. Chesney was one of only three craftsmen trained to create these beautiful bronzes; his apprenticeship and craft required many years of intensive study. The bronze image is in high relief and captures in exquisite detail and elegance two steelhead over a gravel bottom and under a submerged log. The piece measures 32 x 28 inches and would be ideally suited mounted over a fireplace or in a cabin or lodge. The bronze mount weighs 35-40 pounds. Shipping at cost. In fine condition. An original and vibrant artist's proof painting executed in watercolor and acrylic showing a steelhead jumping clear of a northwest stream - likely an Olympic Peninsula river and perhaps a favorite spot of the late Syd Glasso; signed by the artist. In the lower left corner is an original pencil drawing of a steelhead, initialed by Bill Elliott. Mr. Elliott is a respected outdoor artist and illustrator of books; his work has also appeared in numerous periodicals. Below the colored illustration, in a recessed mount, is a variant 'Polar Shrimp' fly on a size 2 hook, dressed by famed northwest fly tier, Syd Glasso of Forks, Washington, with his signature. Mr. Glasso was an exceptionally gifted dresser of steelhead spey flies and Atlantic salmon fly patterns, with a world-wide reputation for excellence and craftsmanship. Flies dressed by Syd Glasso have become extraordinarily difficult to find. The painting measures 14 x 18 {overall measurements of 22 ½ x 23 under glass) with double…

London. John Van Voorst, 1, Paternoster Row. 1851. First edition. [v], vi-viii, [1] 2-74 pp. including appendix. Six plates, with five brilliantly hand-coloured showing flies designed to imitate bait-fish and to attract Sea Trout, Pollack, Pike, Salmon, Trout and Grayling; theyre "full size," as the author describes them. Theres a black and white plate showing how to arrange terminal tackle. The book is notable because its the first work published on fly fishing in salt water. Doesnt that send shivers up your spine? Over the course of 170 years, though, the date reference kind of loses its zing. The plates were illustrated by the firm of Paul Jerrard Litho III Fleet Street. Bowden-Smith describes fly fishing in the coastal waters of Ireland, England, Norway, and Nova Scotia. He gives detailed instructions on how to dress each fly pattern and the materials needed to accomplish it. And if you're so inclined, theres precise instructions on how to dye some of…

Ottawa. Environment Canada. Fisheries and Marine Service. 1974. Deluxe Edition. Folio (12 1/2 x 9). 79 pp. This book of The Salmon is one of a few copies prepared and presented by Environment Canada in appreciation and gratitude to the folks who created, designed, and then produced the visually attractive Salmon Portfolios presented to the Heads of State and other government worthies representing 150 countries at the Third United Nations The Law of the Sea Conference convened in Caracas, Venezuela, in June 1974. It is briefly inscribed and signed by L. H. Legault (the books editor] on the front fly leaf. The portfolios, hand crafted in oak and cloth, held the same Haig-Brown book, The Salmon, along with several large color prints of salmon; the portfolios were formally presented to foreign government officials a month ahead of the conference in a concerted public relations campaign to influence governments to support Canadas position of enacting a 200 mile coastal limitation on high seas…

Theodore Gordon, "though once a real person, he has become our myth," [John McDonald]. Theodore Gordon (1854-1915) was the metaphorical bridge between English dry fly patterns and the American dry fly. Certainly, though, he has been credited with much more than that: for instance, his thorough understanding of aquatic entomology; his introduction of the dry fly to America; that he was "the father of modern American angling"; none of those claims are actually correct, according to angling historian Paul Schullery. Nonetheless Gordon was indeed a thoughtful and gifted writer, and he corresponded with several of anglings great writers and thinkers of the time, including G. E. M. Skues, Frederic Halford, and Robert Bright Marston, editor of The Fishing Gazette in London. This letter from Robert B. Marston is addressed to Theodore Gordons mother, Fanny Jones Gordon, shortly after Theodores death on May 1, 1915. Upon learning of his death, R.B. Marston, the influential…

New York. William Morrow & Company. 1942. First Edition. Octavo (8 x 6). [vi], [1-2], 3-410 pp. including glossary. Inscribed and signed by Roderick Haig-Brown in the year of publication on a tipped-in leaf facing the half-title page presenting Timber to the book editor of the Cincinnati Ohio Times Newspaper, Mona Harrop McElfresh. Blind-stamped on the tipped-in leaf: "Above Tide, / Campbell River, / British Columbia." Tipped-in on the reverse of the front end paper is a lengthy holograph letter penned by Haig-Brown addressed to Mrs. McElfresh discussing Timbers narrative and Rodericks motivations detailing his descriptions of the books protagonists; he thanks her for the favorable review. At the end of the letter, Haig-Brown writes that signing Mrs. McElfreshs copy of Timber would be prohibitively expensive; shipping it to Campbell River and returning the book to her in Ohio, pointing out the high costs of Canadian import duties and sales tax. Generously,…
