Starting out as a wine importer he travelled to Spain & Portugal where he became interested in Antiquities and Arabic culture , geography and history. He travelled extensively throughout North Africa, Ethiopia and Egypt. As an explorer he wanted to discover the source of the Nile . He thus became the first European to trace the Blue Nile to its confluence with the White Nile. Bruce thought that the Blue Nile while smaller than the White Nile was the "Nile of the Ancients"

Frontis portrait and 3 large folding maps, (1 with colour outlines) "This is a fascinating account of the descent of the river named after this intrepid explorer, who was the first white man to navigate its length from its source in the Great Slave Lake to its mouth. On the way back he heard reports of the western sea and of another great river, likely the Yukon, and of white traders, who may have been those exploring the coast. His trip from Fort Chipewyan to the Arctic and return lasted about three months and a half. Having resolved to continue exploration to the west, he returned to England to purchase instruments in preparation for the difficult task ahead of him. He left Fort Chipewyan on October 12, 1792. Working his way up the Peace River he finally established winter quarters. In the spring he continued up across the Rocky Mountain Divide, and after many hazardous experiences reached the Pacific Ocean by way of the Bella Coola river. The vast region of the Rocky Mountains and the coastal…

Two steel-engraved portrait frontispieces, two photogravure plates on India paper, mounted, 36 wood-engraved plates on India, mounted, 6 etchings by M.G. Montbard signed by the artist in pencil. First edition, edition de luxe, number 90 of 250 copies signed by Stanley. Stanley's famous account of his expedition to relieve Emin Pasha (Eduard Schnitzer), the beleaguered governor of equatorial Sudan, contains some of his most celebrated writing, especially his account of the tortuous 450-mile passage through the dense Ituri rain forest. Stanley's dealings with Emin Pasha, who proved singularly resistant to being "rescued", his abandonment of his own rear column and his wider motives for his mission have all come under suspicion then and since, but the book remains a classic of African exploration.

Descripción:
This handwritten collection of sheet music is remarkable as much for its calligraphy and Artistry as it is for its representation of pianoforte pieces popular in mid-19th. Century Halifax. The very personal nature of this labour of love is evident as the author writes
written & dedicated to Miss. V. M. Currie by her loving and affectionate cousin, R.J.C. There are 112 separately titled pieces (approximately 200p.) with a couple of breaks in between with blank pages (one break is about 100 pages long.) The last section has a number of scores with lyrics. The author attributes very little of these works to anyone; some are obviously traditional, others are original. However, in four cases he credits the composer. One he names as Strauss, another is H. Willis. The third composer is G. F. Farrugia who has two pieces here; Priory Polka (1/4 pages); & Fleur de Maria Waltzes (2 pages). Phyllis Blakeley in her work on music in Nova Scotia mentions Farrugia. He…

Frontis portrait, 2 facsimile letters and 18 extra unique engraved portraits of generals and others associated with General Greene Major-General Nathanael Greene (August 7 [O.S. July 27] 1742 June 19, 1786) was an American military officer and planter who served in the Continental Army during the Revolutionary War. He emerged from the war with a reputation as one of George Washington's most talented and dependable officers, and is known for his successful command in the Southern theater of the conflict. Born into a prosperous Quaker family in Warwick, Rhode Island, Greene became active in the colonial opposition to British revenue policies in the early 1770s and helped establish the Kentish Guards, a state militia unit. After the April 1775 Battles of Lexington and Concord, the legislature of Rhode Island established an army and appointed Greene to command it. Later in the year, Greene became a general in the newly established Continental Army. Greene served under George Washington in the…

Frontis of volume I is a folding map & the frontis to volume II is 'The Juju, or Sacrifice House'. Sir Richard Francis Burton, who held many diplomatic posts and served as captain of the army of the East India Company. Famed for his travels and explorations around the globe, by one count Burton spoke twenty-nine languages. Much to his dismay, Burton's first consular posting landed him on a small, desolate island off the coast of West Africa named Fernando Po. He took every opportunity to leave the place, exploring the mainland and making observations on cultural traditions, health and sanitary conditions, and other aspects of life in the region. This work provides an account of his journeys into Sierra Leone and Nigeria to investigate stories of gold and gold mining, and is credited with drawing public attention to mining prospects in the region

An interesting work on wheel bearings for vehicles, mill work, blocks, pendulums, etc. Rowe states in his preface that his improvements stem from his understanding of the principles of bearing construction, in particular that the weight carried by a bearing rather than the contact area is the limiting factor in trying to reduce the friction of a bearing. He describes the use of friction wheels supporting the main axle, whose axles in turn rest on other friction wheels. This system,…
