Heavily rubbed and abraded, but stll tight. 56 FOLD-OUT PLATES, most having to do with bridge design and construction - also some machines and techniques used in construction. IN FRENCH. This book originally belonged to Gen. Richard Delafield ( 1793-1873). He was first in his class at West Point in 1818, and went on to become, in 1864, Chief of Engineers of the Union Army.. 1st Edition. Hardcover. Good/No Jacket.

Rand McNally & Company, Chicago, 1901. This is a really fantastic old atlas- a few years over 100 at this point. 19 3/4" X 15 1/4" in heavy canvas-like cloth. The covers are heavily soiled, fraying at the spine ends and corners. Both hinges cracking - not surprising given a book this massive and heavy. The first 2 pages (flyleaf and a page of advertising), and the rear free endpaper and last 2 leaves are also soiled. The map of Philadelphia, which covers 2 pages has come loose, but is present. I came across 3 maps that have tears in them: I'm rating this book at FAIR PLUS to GOOD MINUS condition, but the maps, with a few exceptions are in very nice condition and also unusually large in size. Basically, there are 3 types of maps in this atlas: 1) state maps showing railroad lines and cities. There are tables of cities and towns, rivers, mountains etc., + tables showing where the various rail systems go. Very fine at one time, but now in need of rebinding or at least repair. This is the "second edition revised and augmented. Leather on spines dried out and chipped. Vol. 1: Engraved frontis portrait of Johnson. Long strip of leather missing from the spine.Rest of spine chipped and abraded as are tops of both covers. Marbled endpapers. These books have 1789 bookplates of the Reverend W. Barrow, LLD SAS. Both covers are attached, but literally by threads, The twine that is used to bind the book. The rest of the hinges are broken through. Vol.2: Light foxing in the first few pp. Front cover completely detached, but present. Otherwise, this volume is clean, tight, and unmarked: VERY GOOD MINUS condition. 89pp. + 2pp of ads. NOTE that this edition of THE FALLS OF TAUGHANNOCK is illustrated with 4 actual albumen PHOTOGRAPHS mounted on very heavy card stock among the text. [BE009]. Hardcover. Very Good/No Jacket.

All edges and endpapers marbled. Top edges tend to be darkened; There is the occasional scuff, a little wear at spine ends and corners, but overall, these volumes are solid, unmarked, square, and clean: NEAR FINE condition. Contents nice and fresh-looking. Bear in mind that this set is 150 years old. I can't imagine there is a nicer set anywhere. These are 16 massive and very heavy volumes.
