London: Longman, Brown and Co. et al.. Very Good+. 1847. Half Leather. The works of Alexander Pope (1688-1744) are presented in a deluxe eight volume set. Includes a life of Pope by William Roscoe. The varied output consists of poems, translations, essays, satires, "moral epistles," prose writings, three volumes of his correspondence, and fragments and fugitive pieces. Mr. Pope is principally remembered for his poetry and his satirical writings. Many of his sayings are still in common usage, such as "damning with faint praise," or "to err is human; to forgive, divine." Though the title page promises "illustrations," the only illustration in the entire set is a frontis portrait of Pope, engraved by W. H. Worthington from a painting by I. Richardson in volume I. --- Handsomely bound in half calf covers over marbled boards, marbled endpapers and all textblock edges marbled. A sealed, apparently undamaged copy of an oversize work presenting spectacular photographic views of the United States by photographer Jake Rajs. Other copies of this work note a limitation of 5000 copies and include a laid-in numbered print, signed by Jake Rajs. Since this copy is sealed, it is not possible to ascertain that this copy includes the print or the limitation. Includes an introduction by Walter Cronkite. This edition is not to be confused with a later, so-called "Mini Edition" of this work. --- Volume appears to be bound in black cloth and wrapped in jacket with color view of Niagara Falls to front panel, statue of a military sentry to back panel. --- Though unverifiable, it appears this book and its jacket are in about Fine condition. (NOTE: Due to the weight of this item, extra shipping charges may be requested for any shipment other than by USPS Media Mail in the US.) ; Oblong Quarto - 11… Leer más
