A two-volume first edition of an account of the Long Expedition to the Rocky Mountains by expedition botanist and geologist Edwin James. Compiled from the notes of Major Stephen H. Long, Mr. T. Say, and other gentlemen of the party by Mr. James. This rather scarce set presents the account of the experiences of the Stephen H. Long expedition of 1819-1820, in which Long was sent to find the source of the Platte River in the Rocky Mountains. All of his classics, from "Sketches by Boz" through "Edwin Drood" are here. Each volume with photogravure (color added) frontis illustrations, with captioned tissue-guards. Also with about 12 to 16 black & white plates per volume bearing illustrations by the original Dickens illustrators such as Hablot K. Browne ("Phiz") and Robert Seymour. The varied output consists of poems, translations, essays, satires, "moral epistles," prose writings, three volumes of his correspondence, and fragments and fugitive pieces. Mr. Pope is principally remembered for his poetry and his satirical writings. Many of his sayings are still in common usage, such as "damning with faint praise," or "to err is human; to forgive, divine." Though the title page promises "illustrations," the only illustration in the entire set is a frontis portrait of Pope, engraved by W. H. Worthington from a painting by I. Mark Twain's humorous fantasy novel concerns his Colonel Mulberry Sellers character, an American who has notions of joining elite British society; and Berkeley Rossmore, an Englishman of high birth who wishes to relocate to America. With black & white illustrations throughout by Dan Beard. An interesting aspect of this work is that Twain attempted to write this entire novel without making any references to weather (a goal which was not quite fully achieved). --- In olive cloth with illustrations and decorations in black to cover and spine; gilt-stamped cover & spine titling. However, this copy is from the ISBN-era: estimated publication date c.1970s. This is one of the Dr. Seuss titles that was banned from due to political incorrectness in 2021. --- In publisher's "Gibralter Library Binding" with Seuss illustrations to front and back covers which are on blue cloth-covered boards.
