This edition is bound in full leather, with marbled endpapers, decorative stamping on the cover, gilt stamping on the edges of the boards, raised bands on the spine and gilt lettering on a leather spine label. Text is clean and crisp; light wear to spine at bottom. Some mild rubbing and chipping to leather along edges. New York: Harper & Brothers, 1850. This set of the first 12 volumes of the influential Harper's New Monthly Magazine is bound in 3/4 crimson leather, with marbled boards and gilt spine lettering. Vol. 1 is dated 1850; vol. 12 goes through May 1856. Varying wear to these books; most show edgewear, fading of spines or rubbing, some scattered foxing; set is good overall. Volumes V and VI show heaviest fading of leather spines, all others appear deep red, these have gone to lighter brown. Significant literary contributions to these volumes includes the serialization of works by Dickens, such as "Little Dorritt" and "Bleak House," and the first appearance in print of what would become Herman Melville's epic "Moby Dick," here titled "The Town-Ho's Story" in Vol. III. Front cover is soiled, with stains and water spots. Binding is a bit loose, with some leather missing. Inner pages very clean. Atlas is created from actual surveys by and under the direction of F.W. Beers, A.D. Ellis & G.G. Soule. Hand colored maps are in nice condition, showing the towns and villages of Otsego County. The detailed maps contain information about businesses in each town. New York: John S. Bartlett MD, 1832. This antique bound collection of "The Albion" spans from Volume 10, No. 1 (June 11, 1831) to Volume 10, No. 52 (June 2, 1832). The magazine was founded by James S. Buckingham, a British journalist and travel writer. The magazine was established in New York City with the primary aim of serving the British expatriate community in the United States. It also catered to American readers who had an interest in British literature, politics, and culture. The copy features large marbled boards with a leather spine, with titles in gilt. Leather shows wear, heaviest at top and bottom of spine with some loss, chipping and wear along hinges. Marbled boards show chipping, rubbing and wear, heaviest at corners where leather has worn down. Originally published in 1936, it detailed all aspects of party bureaucracy. Text in German, illustrated throughout, many in color. Bound in red cloth with decoration on front and spine. Pages slightly browned, some light cover wear and soil. Small scuff on lower spine. Textblock is tight, pages unmarked. 6" x 8" with 596 indexed pages. Albany, N.Y.: J. Munsell, 1871. This antique hardcover limited-edition book is bound in brown cloth boards with a paste-down spine label with black lettering. Covers are worn, cover edges and corners show heavy wear, some soil; endpapers browned, with some markings; most inner pages clean. This edition was "annotated" by the previous owner, with notes and pasted-in information throughout - all concerning the edition, illustrations and information containted within. This book was limited to 50 copies; it is illustrated throughout with full-page steel engraving plates. Additionally, this copy was the former property of author William Stone. Stone's bookplate appears on the front inner board, and pasted down to the front endpaper is a letter to Stone from the book's author, Jeptha Simms, dated Sept. 26, 1881. Philadelphia: Kimber & Richardson, 1815. This antique hardcover set of two volumes is bound in 3/4 brown leather, with blue-green boards. Spines have black leather labels with gilt lettering, and gilt decoration. Overall good condition for a set of this age, with typical wear: boards have soil, foxing and soil throughout, but bindings generally tight. Additionally. Vol. 1 has a spine label, and both volumes have library bookplates on front inner boards, and inscriptions. Vol. 1 has one panel detached of a fold-out illustration, and small damage on lower edge. Leather is worn and chipped. These two volumes of the "Emporium," edited by Thomas Cooper, represent the preeminent scientific knowledge of the early 19th century. Boston: James R. Osgood & Co., 1878. This antique book recounts the author's visit to the South Sea islands in 1864 in the form of letters to a friend. Stoddard, who was part of the "Crowd," an informal group of artists that frequented Carmel, California (including Jack London, Joaquin Miller, Ambrose Bierce, Mary Austin and others), writes in a style of endearing charmed delight. Stoddard edited and published the first incarnation of the Overland Monthly magazine, along with Bret Harte and Ina Coolbirth. Impressive deluxe edition with 100 fine photogravure illustrations. Each volume measures 10 x 12 inches. Textblocks are very clean and crisp, minimal soil. Leather is generally intact and good condition, some minor chipping and wear to edges, each volume shows varying degrees of wear and chipping to upper and lower portions of spine, wear to hinges. Macmillan, 1913. This is the scarce and desireable edition that contains 32 full color illustrations by Warwick Goble. This book is a former library copy, and does not have the original binding. It has a library binding in red with black designs. Simple black text on spine. Original book has no library markings, new rear endpaper attached to library binding show some remnants of card slot removal. No other markings that I can find. 32 colour illustrations by Warwick Goble with captioned tissue-guards (all present). List of illustrations indicated that there should be a plate on page 299, "They were very friendly, however, and inquired her name. Snowdrop' answered she." is actually bound in at page 304. Pages show some soil and foxing, wear at edges, a few pages have small closed tears.
