Early reprint edition 1872 in similar format to the original: spines and title pages: Part First; Part Second; publisher's ad at rear states two volumes $3.00. -- Each volume has four illustrations. -- This copy was gifted to the owner in 1873, with a quote about friendship, written in a tiny elegant hand. -- Hardcover, two volumes, green cloth with elaborate gold spine decoration, brown endsheets. Condition: good-only (spines slanted and tips worn; covers lightly rubbed; hinges cracked on outside and inside and were possibly repaired; stain top- and bottom-edges which shows on inner margins of pages). -- Overall, the decorated spines are fairly attractive, and the early ownership makes a charming addition to this much-loved classic.

First Edition, First Printing. -- Subtitle: An account of the successes and the mistakes of an amateur in thirty-five years of farming, building, and development: together with a practical plan for securing a home and an independent income, starting with small capital. -- An amazing amount of information, details such as hearths, window seats, ox versus horse, blizzards. Illustrated with hundreds of photos, often a dozen on one page. Many of the house pictures, exteriors, staircases, windows are in the Arts and Crafts style. Chapter on bungalows. Log cabins to 20-bedroom homes. Yachts and sailing trips. There is an extensive index, and also an arbortetum index, list of 330 "latch strings" which add to comfort and luxury in a house. -- Hardcover, TEG top-edge-gilt, gilt decorated front cover. Condition: very good minus (spine tips and corners frayed and spine lettering a bit dulled; owner name). Binding is tight and pages are quite bright.

England British Colour Council, 1938, hardcover. Standardized color terms for horticulture, shown in 200 color chips, four on each page. Each page has color equivalent names in other references, a brief history of the color, foreign synonyms, and many have horiticultural examples. A cardboard frame shaped to view the individual chips is laid in. Useful introductions. -- Hardcover, two volumes. Condition: near fine (the glossy pages are curled at fore-edge; one page has surface tear). All colors are bright and protected.

Condition: very good minus (spine is worn at crown and edges, some wrinkle, repaired; binding tight and pages quite bright).

Illustrated by Mac Harshberger, with his striking Art Deco style relief prints, some with yellow color added. -- SIGNED by the artist, as "Mickey" to his sister (and artistic collaborator), in French: Pour ma chere petite soem - Kay The "haut" [?] / De son cher petit frere - Mickey The "microtome". -- There are pencilled comments indicating misorientation or size, etc. of the images; someone (a different hand) wrote in pencil comments are "by artist, Kay Harshberger." -- Hardcover, black cloth spine and corners over gold-design boards, printed spine label. Condition: very good minus (spine label tanned with tiny chip; cover edges lightly rubbed; short narrow stain to top page margins). Both preface and title page are dated 1878. **This copy has two sepia photographs pasted in, opposite to and on verso of title page, with the handwritten names of George Kenning and of A F A Woodford; these are in different hands, but it is not known if they are actually signatures of the two men** Woodford compiled and edited the book, which is a condensation of the immense work by Mackey; Kenning sponsored and published the work. Alphabetical. Includes list of subscribers. Publisher's catalog at rear. -- Hardcover, blue cloth with gold and black embossed decorations, front cover and spine, including gold portraits of three Grand Masters. Condition: very good overall (bright cover with clean pages, with endsheets cracked but still sound binding; spine just faintly darkened, with light rubbing at tips and edges; pp,16-17 soiled apparently in the printing process; edges lightly foxed).

Condition: near fine (small scuff spots, light corner wear showing boards--pages bright and binding tight).

Condition: very good (spine letters bit dulled; outer pages foxed; owner name; no jacket). Pages are otherwise clear and crisp, and binding is tight.

There are 13 plates each with two folds, showing the heading down (pruning) method for impaired trees; one plate shows the pruning tools. -- Bookplate of Penry Williams (scuffed in the non-printed areas). Condition: good-plus (leather decorated spine in rubbed at edges; patterned boards are also rubbed at edges and on surface; endsheets are sunned at edges; most pages are bright, with some tanned text areas and some stains; the folded plates are offset on themselves and on opposing pages).
