Less common maroon cloth variant, with green spine lettering and no stain to top textblock edge. Slight soiling to upper textblock edge; covers and contents clean, unworn, no marking or writing. Binding square and tight. A very nice copy which, alas, is missing the jacket, and priced accordingly.

The book has a very slight bump to one corner, dulling on the spine, and very brief foxing on the endpapers and first and last pages. The dust jacket has a 2.5" closed tear, considerable rubbing at the extremities, very shallow chipping and edgewear, a surface tear and small piece of tape at the bottom of the rear panel, and sunning.

Though early editions include the subtitle "And Other Stories" and much of its material had been previously published as individual short stories, Faulkner conceived of the book as a unified whole, proposing it to his Random House editor as "a more or less continuous narrative, somewhat after THE UNVANQUISHED" (Blotner). The UK edition followed a few months after the US edition and was printed to the "authorized economy standard" imposed on publishers by war shortages; copies in this condition are correspondingly uncommon. 8'' x 5.25''.
