Descripción:
Viking, New York, 1936. 1st Edition. Hardcover. Good. First printing, but in good condition only, lacking the dust jacket and with splitting on the spine and wear to the outer corners of boards. Some short tears to a few pages. Nonetheless, a great and rare book, scarce in the first edition. Bound in publishers decorated pink paper-covered boards with a tan cloth spine. This book was banned by Franco because of its timely, and enduring, pacifist (and environmentalist) message. Please inquire for photos.

Descripción:
New York: Viking, 1936. First edition. Very good in good jacket.. First printing, in later printing dust jacket, with 3 Christmas cards from the Leaf family laid in. The first collaboration of Lawson and Leaf, FERDINAND was a hit with children but caused controversy among adults: the story of the bull who would rather smell the flowers than fight with the other bulls was read politically in the context of the Spanish Civil War. Although he hadn't meant for the book to carry an ideological message, Leaf received angry letters claiming he was "deliberately corrupting children of an impressionable age" (quoted in Davis). Each of the Christmas cards laid in has an illustration by Leaf created especially for the card. One has an extra pen note and ink doodle by Leaf with a long note on the verso from Leaf's wife. Another is inscribed by Leaf. A wonderful work, in which the beauty of nonconformity still reads as subversive. 8'' x 7''. Original quarter tan cloth, red pictorial boards. Original unclipped…

Descripción:
Viking, 1936. 1st Edition. Hardcover. Very Good/No Jacket. An advance copy of the first edition, with "First Published September 1936 on the copyright page." The book is larger than the first edition, and has rough uncut pages. The cover also differs, with brown cloth and sections of the eventual first edition cover attached. This is obviously some sort of advance production copy, probably prepared by Viking Press for internal use. The only copy we have ever seen or heard of. It is in very good condition, with the book block lying loose in the covers. There is no evidence of glue, so the two were probably never attached. Housed in a custom-made collector's slipcase.
