Maroon cloth binding with gilt lettering on the spine (the spine has faded to brown but the gilt lettering is still visible). Clean text; 448 pages, indexed. There is a publisher's advert for the two-volume quarto edition in the front. Rubbed at the head and foot of the spine and mildly bumped. Withal, a sound copy. Size: 12mo - over 6¾" - 7¾" tall. First American Edition.. Hard Cover. Very Good/No Jacket.

This is a Near Fine copy of "A New Edition" in a beautiful full-leather Fine Binding. Polished red calf, ruled with gilt. The spine has five raised bands with fancy gilt decorations; the label is green with gilt lettering. Front cover has a school's heraldric device with Latin motto (Apropriately, "With God's Help"). Endpapers and all edges are marbled. Clean text; 448 pages; indexed. Light rub to corners and top of spine; top page edge has darkened a bit. Minor spotting to the endpapers. Else a Fine copy. First Thus. Full-Leather. Near Fine/No Jacket. 12mo - over 6¾" - 7¾" tall.

Tight, handsome "New Edition Revised and Enlarged" -- condensed, in other words -- of the best-known work (first published in five volumes between 1879 and 1897) of the versatile Irish historian, journalist, novelist, politician and Member of Parliament (1830-1912) in lovely decorative binding. Tipped to blank leaf facing title page is a unique frontispiece, a fine 4" X 3" slip which he boldly inscribes and signs "Faithfully Yours / Justin McCarthy" in brown ink. Spine title: "Our Own Times.
