Spines in six compartments separated by raised bands, gilt lettering in two compartments, intricate gilt tooling in the remainder. Marbled endpapers. Top edges gilt. First vol. has frontispiece portrait with tissue guard. Armoral bookplate of Howell Wharton Bickley (1842-80) to each front pastedown. "MButler" penciled on top of three bookplates. A handsome set, particularly when shelved. All volumes unmarked, tightly bound, square and clean. No evident repairs. Interiors are in exceptional condition for books nearly 150 years old, with only slight tanning. Exteriors show a good deal of reading and shelf wear and general abrasion. Rubbing and chipping at hinges and spine ends. A 1.5 inch gouge mars the spine of Vol. 5. Dents to top and bottom edges of the rear covers of Vols. 5 and 7. One of 1,000 numbered sets of the 'Whitehall Edition'. 20 volumes complete (10 vols. of essays, 10 vols. of history). Bound in publishers's polished brown calf over dark green cloth boards, gilt coat of arms on front covers, spines with gilt titling and gilt-ruled compartments (slight wear along edges of covers, some corners slightly bumped, minor rubbing to spines on two volumes). Macaulay (1800-1859), English author, essayist, historian and statesman. Macaulay's essays are a model of English prose, and offer incisive commentary upon diverse themes. PROVENANCE: Each volume has engraved armorial bookplate of Edward Bell; some volumes have bookplate of his son Edward Bell, Jr.; each volume has faint ink inscription noting that the set was a gift from 'Grandma Bell' .B/w Illustrations & Engraving.

Reverend Henry William Watson (1827-1903) was a scholar who attended King's College London and Trinity College Cambridge before working as the Mathematics Master at Harrow School from 1857-1865. Thomas Babington Macaulay, 1st Baron Macaulay, PC (1800 – 1859) was a British historian and Whig politician. He wrote extensively as an essayist and reviewer; his books on British history were hailed as literary masterpieces. He held political office as Secretary at War between 1839 and 1841 and Paymaster-General between 1846 and 1848. He played a major role in introducing English and western concepts to education in India. He supported the replacement of Persian by English as the official language, the use of English as the medium of instruction in all schools, and the training of English-speaking Indians as teachers.
