Edinburgh: Fraser & Co., 1836. Hardcover. Fine/No Jacket. Small hardback. Leather spine and corners. Boards are a a swirl of brown, green, pin, beige and other colors. Rubbing/wear to leather. Two fairly deep gashes on the front boards near the top; one is about 2 1/4" long, the other 1 1/4" long. They go through the top tayer. Another small area on the outer side of the front board, where the top layer is loose. The gold print and decorations on the spine and clear and crisp. PO's name on the inside front cover. The pages are tight; clean/unmarked, except for the backside of the last end page, which has some pencil squiggels on it. 356 pages. With illustrations. Only print info is the year on the bottom of the title page "MDCCCXXXVI" A lovely little book in Fine or better condition given its age. Size: 16mo - over 5¾" - 6¾" tall

An UNCOMMON impressively edited and illustrated Bohn edition of White's natural history classic in the original elaborately embossed publisher's cloth. Frontispiece and other handsome full page engravings are unfoxed and clean. Many gatherings unopened and pristine; backstrip slightly faded with a lightly repaired tears affecting the head of the spine & small white spot mid-spine. Reprints the 1895 Bell edition.

The lovely animal plates are similar to those found in Jardine. Frontis has foxing. Otherwise, but for occasional light and trivial soiling, a clean and tight copy. Some fading of gilt decoration on spine. Repair along front gutter. Darkening along both gutters. Wear along spine tips.

With bright red cloth-covered boards & faded gilt design to front & spine, this hardcover is in VG condition: extremely clean, binding straight & strong; a bit of mottling to rear board & a few tiny dark spots there. Two other plates, one folding as well. Lovely copy of eighteenth century classic and seminal work of natural history which still makes for highly enjoyable reading. As important as the many specific observations White made is his example as a close observer of the natural world which all lovers of nature can still emulate as well as the enthusiasm and spirit he brought to the endeavor. The epistolatory form he chose, tantamount to a diary, works wonderfully stylistically by creating an intimacy between him and the reader, and thus the reader is likely to become enthralled. Minor soiling and foxing scattered in volumes. The leather is rubbed along joints, and is overall a tad on the dry side.

With twelve engraved plates, including the hand-colored "Hybrid Pheasent" and the multifolding frontispiece panorama of Selborne. Front board is neatly detached from spine, though binding remains solid. Bookplate (John William Pease) on front pastedown. A few penciled notations in the margins. Foxing throughout with a minor damp stain to bottom of pages towards the end of the book, otherwise an excellent copy of this early printing of this ground-breaking work in natural history.
