North Hollywood: Republic Pictures, 1948. Vintage studio still photograph from the 1948 film. Released the same year as Laurence Olivier's much lauded "Hamlet," Welles' "Macbeth," shot on a modest budget and very tight production schedule, was largely overshadowed by Olivier's film and poorly received upon release. Republic Pictures, after the film tested unfavorably in a few cities, had Welles remove two reels and re-record the film, replacing the Scottish burrs Welles requested with the actors' natural voices. The original uncut version, with Scottish burr, were restored by the UCLA Film and Television Archive and the Folger Shakespeare Library in 1980, and has since be reconsidered as one of Welles' most significant films. Beverly Hills, CA: Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer [MGM], 1953. Collection of nine vintage studio still photographs from the 1953 film. Paper snipe affixed to the verso of some of the stills. Featuring a booming, articulate Marlon Brando, in a notable departure from previous films. At first thought to be too incoherent due to his mumbling slurred speech in "A Streetcar Named Desire," Brando proved himself quite the versatile actor in his role as Mark Antony. Set in Rome, shot on location in California. 8 x 10 inches. Near Fine.

Based on the 1968 rock musical, which was in turn based on Shakespeare's "Othello." Othello, the pacifist leader of a hippie commune in the New Mexico desert, faces off against conniving, devilish dropout Iago. Set and shot on location in Espanola and Santa Fe, New Mexico. Seven 10 x 8 inches, one 7.5 x 9.75 inches. Near Fine.

With manuscript annotations and an agency stamp on the verso. The classic story of two star-crossed teenagers whose romance reconciles the long-lived feud between their families. Director-screenwriter Franco Zeffirelli's production was the first film to cast actors who were actually close to the noted age of the characters in the Shakespearean play. Nominated for four Academy Awards and winning two, making it the last Shakespeare adaptation to be nominated for Best Picture to date. Set in Italy, shot on location in various locations throughout Montagna, Gubbio, Rome, Tuscania, and Pienza, Italy. Program: 9 x 12 inches. 16 leaves, side stapled. Vintage broadside for a series of performances at the Royal Princess's Theatre, Saturday, December 11, 1852, including Shakespeare's "Twelfth Night, or What You Will," Samuel Birch's 1825 musical drama "The Adopted Child," and John Poole's 1833 play "Deaf as a Post: A Farce, in One Act," two of which are noted as the first of four farewell performances by British stage comedian and actor George Bartley. With a manuscript ink annotation of a gift inscription on the bottom right. Named for Princess Victoria before her accession as queen, the Royal Princess's Theatre opened in 1836 on Oxford Street in London on the previous location of the "Queen's Bazaar," a gallery which opened in 1828 and housed paintings and a moving diorama by the celebrated British painter Clarkson Frederick Stanfield and David Roberts. One photograph shows Victor Jory in a dazzling sequined costume and twig crown as Oberon, and the other shows Jory with actress Anita Louise as Titania. Mimeo snipe affixed to the verso of one photograph, and both with manuscript pencil and ink cropping annotations on the verso. From the archive of film historian and author Joel Finler. Based on the classic 1595 play, about the strange and fantastical events surrounding the marriage of the Duke of Athens and the Queen of the Amazons. The film debut of Olivia de Havilland. Very Good plus, with moderate edgewear and toning, and one with pinholes at the corners.

Spain: Internacional Films, 1967. Two vintage oversize borderless double weight reference photographs from the 1967 film. With a dealer stamp on the verso, along with manuscript ink annotations regarding layout. Based on Orson Welles' early play "Five Kings," which condensed Shakespeare's War of the Roses cycle into one story. The film was the last of Welles' three legendary Shakespearean adaptations, following "Macbeth" (1948) and "Othello" (1951). As with nearly all of Welles' efforts as a director, the film was plagued by financial and logistical problems, shot with nearly no budget, and received no promotion and a very limited release-but is now rightfully regarded as his final masterpiece. Nominated for the Palme d'Or, and winner of two other awards at Cannes in 1966. Shot on location in Spain. One photograph 11.75 x 9.5 inches, one photograph 11.5 x 9.5 inches. Very Good plus overall, with light creases and scratches.

Beverly Hills, CA: Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer [MGM], 1952. Vintage oversize double weight photograph of James Mason on location in Bronson Canyon, California, for the shooting of "Julius Caesar" in 1952. Shot and struck by the film's still photographer, Bob Willoughby. SIGNED by Willoughby at the bottom right margin in black ink, with his rubber stamp on the verso (noting his Los Angeles address). Full provenance available. After studying with Saul Bass at the Kann Institute of Art in Los Angeles, photographer Robert Willoughby began working for magazines such as "Life," "Look," and "Harper's Bazaar" in the late 1940s. He spent the next 20-plus years as a set photographer for every major studio and magazine, with his images seen in print literally every week of his career. Vintage script for the 1984 televised stage production of the Shakespeare play, copy belonging to Speech and Dialect Coach Roberta Farkas, her name in manuscript ink on both the top right of the recto and the top of the verso of the front wrapper. Profusely annotated on every page in manuscript ink and pencil in multiple colors, regarding dialect, elocution, as well as camera choice and staging. Farkas even supplies a legend on the verso of the front wrapper of "Yellow = 1st read-thru / Dark red = 12/17 run thru / Pink [over struck 'green'] = 12/19 afternoon / Navy = Weds, taping / Green = Thurs. aft. taping." Front wrapper with copy number "26" in manuscript pencil on the bottom right, and front wrapper and title page both feature director credits to Paul Blake, struck through, with Lawrence Carra written in, in manuscript ink. Wengen, Switzerland: Alpine Films, 1965. Vintage oversize double weight photograph of Orson Welles and John Gielgud on location in Spain for the shooting of "Chimes at Midnight" in 1965. Shot and struck by noted photographer Nicolas Tikhomoroff, with his rubber stamp and the stamp of his Parisian agency, V.I.P., on the verso. "Chimes at Midnight," Welles' third of three legendary Shakespearean adaptations and last masterpiece, is based on his early play "Five Kings," which condensed Shakespeare's War of the Roses cycle into one story. Welles produced the play in New York in 1939 but the opening night, during which Part 1 was performed, was a disaster, and Part 2 was never staged. He revamped the show and revisited it in 1960, again without success. The later production became the basis for this film, in which Welles plays Falstaff. Based on Shakespeare's play "King Lear." An elderly warlord in medieval Japan divides his vast empire among his three sons. The power corrupts them and turns them on each other, as well as their father. Nominated for four Academy Awards including Best Director for Kurosawa, winning one.
